Paris Hilton arrested at World Cup

Saturday, July 3rd, 2010

Paris Hilton was arrested in South Africa and questioned overnight on suspicion of possessing marijuana.

The heiress and a friend were detained at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium after watching the World Cup quarter-final match between Brazil and the Netherlands.

According to reports, Paris was held in a cell before appearing before a judge in a Fifa World Cup courtroom. She was released after her close friend, freelance photographer Jennifer Rovero, pleaded guilty to possessing the drug.

“Paris Hilton was questioned today by police in South Africa on allegations of smoking marijuana,” her publicist said. “However I can confirm that the incident was a complete misunderstanding and it was actually another person in the group who did it. The case has been dropped against Paris and no charges will be made.”

Rovero was sentenced to pay a small fine or face 30 days imprisonment – the fine was paid and she was released.

Afterwards, Paris declared her innocence on Twitter: “Hey guys, there’s a lot of crazy rumours going around. Just want you all to know the truth. Everything is completely fine. I was not charged or arrested, cause I didn’t do anything.””

Location Data Sensitive Like Medical Information, Says Congressional Witness

Friday, February 26th, 2010

“The writing is on the wall that there will be baseline privacy legislation introduced,” said John Morris, general counsel for the Center for Democracy & Technology at a Congressional hearing on location data and privacy yesterday. “It will require location be treated as sensitive data, like medical data. You’ll need to do more than just post a disclosure statement.” We’re entering an era of location as platform but should that location data be as fundamentally private by default as medical information is? Sponsor Many users are concerned about their location being exposed in ways they don’t control and that have adverse impacts on their safety and freedom. That’s one side of the debate. These concerns could cause development of location based services to backfire, argues the Center for Democracy & Technology’s Erica Newland in a blog post today : Location privacy is a timely issue here at the dawn of the location-enabled Web: ensuring that location information is subject to neither commercial nor government misuse – but is instead transmitted and accessed in a privacy-protective way – is essential to the long-term success of location-based applications and services. Beyond the risks to individualsʼ privacy, the present lack of privacy protection also creates market risks for the very companies seeking to capitalize on location services. That’s well put, but does location data need to be default private like medical information in order to prevent misuse and to support an economy of innovation? Some people believe that it is the culture of sharing by default that makes location based services what they are. As one reader said in our Google Buzz chat on this topic : “people will never treat location like medical data, because they are so willing to give it up to the world in so many cases. It becomes an issue of surveillance vs. sousveillance.” Sousveillance is outward-facing surveillance. Location based social networks offer not just a way for us to be seen, but a way for us to see what the rest of the world around us is doing. Checking in to a location is interesting not just so other people know you’re there, but so you can see who else you know has been there as well and what they said about it. Of course exposure of your location is going to be opt-in on all of these services, but the locations you choose to check-in at ought to be public on some level so that interesting services can be built on top of them. See Gowalla’s new API , for example, or our post What Twitter’s New Geolocation API Makes Possible . Of course it would also be good to let users limit exposure of their location in certain situations to certain circles of friends. I might be happy to check-in at certain establishments if that was only made visible to a select group of my friends (not my family) and to other people checking in at that location, for example. But treating location data like medical data sounds like a recipe for shrouding it in complete privacy by default. Not allowing information about our activities in public… to be public…would be a real blow to the location service ecosystem. Photo: Samuri on a Cell Phone by Flickr user rumpleteaser. Discuss

Mighty Wallet, Air Mail

A friend of mine gifted me with this really cool Mighty Wallet the other day and almost everyone I’ve showed it to wants one too. It really does feel like paper and looks like an authentic folded envelope! I love it! It’s 100% recyclable and also tear-free (don’t worry). Best of all, it only costs 5KD and you can order it online from a local online store.

There are a total of 22 awesome designs to choose from. My favorite ones are the “3 Ring Binder,” “Graffiti,” “Mix Tape,” “News Print,” and “Tattoo.”

Blood Falls, Antarctica

This is probably the coolest natural thing I’ve ever seen! Incredible! There is a glacier in Antarctica that seeps red liquid, making it look like the glacier is bleeding.

Discovered in 1911 by a member of Robert Scott’s ill-fated expedition team, its rusty color was at first theorized to be caused by some sort of algae growth. Later, however, it was proven to be due to iron oxidation. Every so often, the glacier spews forth a clear, iron-rich liquid that quickly oxidizes and turns a deep shade of red.

Man Invents Talking Sex Robot

Roxxxy, Sex Robot

Roxxy the robot:

  • Can hold intelligent conversations (NASCAR or even Middle East politics).
  • Has five distinct “personalities” to choose from.
  • Is covered with heated soft to the touch silicone skin (material used for prosthetic limbs).
  • Has almost fully functional sex organs.
  • Can climax and simulate an orgasm.

All jokes aside, this is great for the Arab culture. Men and boys can have the ultimate tool to release their built-up-to-the-rim-and-about-to-explode sexual tension. The government could provide discounts for the masses as an attempt to tone down the public harassment, pre-marital sex and most importantly, rape.

I commend this man from New Jersey. Although his intentions might not have been to help people, I’m sure that a good number of the customers will be those that are seeking actually help: sex offenders, addicts, shy men, etc.

Also, I think it’s really interesting that women have inquired about Roxxy as well.

Women shortage in China…

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

Some 24 million Chinese men of marrying age will find themselves lacking wives in 2020, partly because of the country’s one-child policy, which has led to the abortion of female fetuses, state media said Monday.

Sex-specific abortions have led to a large male population born since the 1980s, the China Daily newspaper said, citing a study conducted by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

The gender imbalance means that the next decade will see many intergenerational marriages: young men married to women much older than them, the study said.

China’s Communist Party implemented the one-child rule three decades ago, amid fears that the country would not be able to feed a skyrocketing population. The policy has prevented about 400 million births, China Daily said.

China’s population, which stands at about 1.3 billion, is growing at the rate of 0.6 percent. It is expected to peak around 1.6 billion by 2050, the U.S. State Department said.

Qatar leads the way

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

Great news. Qatar will be setting up a solar power project that would cost around 1 billion dollars. I think it is time that this region should rethink the future of energy and its impact to the environment. Now with the plans to have a shared power grid between the GCC countries, I feel that each needs to find its renewable source and utilize it. Would it hurt to have wind generators, geothermal plants, and dare I say it nuclear power plants? A big thank you for Copenhagen for taking the initiative in the world’s environmental issues. And a big praise for Qatar and UAE’s Masdar City for setting an example for its oil rich neighbors in investing in renewable (clean) energy …and create new jobs while they are at it.

A friend in need

“There are four ways, and only four ways, in which we have contact with the world. We are evaluated and classified by these four contacts: what we do, how we look, what we say, and how we say it.” -Dale Carnegie

It caught me by surprise last night when they have inaugurated the Burj Dubai Khalifa. When it comes to renaming the tallest building in world, I believe it to be an ingenious move from Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum ruler of Dubai. As we all know that Dubai wasn’t in the best shape during the recession and the neighboring emirate Abu Dhabi came to its aide. What better way to express one’s gratitude other than renaming a record-breaking (828 meter) building and the new symbol of a country after the ruler of Abu Dhabi. I am sure Sheikh Khalifa would appreciate it also.

  • They’re not very popular with this fast-paced and simple-minded world.
  • They’re happy to perform their duties and go about unnoticed and unappreciated.
  • They’re unlikely to let you down.

So embrace them as they are and show them a bit of appreciation )

Obama wins the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 . Personally, regardless his efforts done to solve many issues I think it’s still soon to grant him such a prize. He never found any solution to any problem yet !

And why we arabs are deprived from nobel prizes ? Don’t we have genuises in different fields ?

Obama addresses the LGBT community…

Sunday, October 11th, 2009

On his side again. What a moving speech. No international news channel broadcast this (except for a tiny bit in BBC International). They should have really. This message of change should’ve gotten across to the world because it’s not just an American issue, it’s an international issue. When the world listen to one of the most loved public figures the world over say such things they might realize that this is a issue of concern and look around them. Hate, in any form, should never be accepted. One’s beliefs shouldn’t curtail another person’s road to happiness. Anyway, getting too preachy here. But, you get the point. Click below for the rest of the speech.

How long would you like to live?

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

How long would you like to live? 60, 80 or probably 100? Even more?

Well that is  question that I want to ask all of you. When would you think that you ave lived enough and that it would be time to bid farewell to this world.

Mankind has always wished to prolong one’s life on this planet. Scientists & others have ever looked finding ways to gain immortality.  Our loved ones always wish us to live a little longer. Even we do at times. But there is a limit to everything and one has to ultimately die.

This fascination with the ‘immortality wish’ has always been a fad with the generations. I don’t understand, what one is to do after you have achieved all that you wished for. Even if you have not achieved the whole lot, there is always a day after which you are incapable to achieving it for various reasons such as physical, mental, monetary, or others. That is when you wish, you were better dead. It is futile to go on living endlessly.

There was recent news that scientists have devised a pill that can add 25 years to your lifespan. The drug, touted as the “elixir of life” drug, works by using a molecule called spermidine, which helps to protect the body against damaging chemicals known as free radicals.

If this drug is available to the common man, how do you think, it will change the perception of life. Even if 10% of the population has access to this drug, imagine, how the existing earth resources will be available to all.

If the scientific committee decides to give this drug to only 100 people, who all do you think are the deserving candidates, who can change and improve the lot of the earthlings?

List of the deserving candidates for the 25 years add-on pill:

Cabinet meeting – where? Underwater!!!

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

Malaysian President Mohamed Nasheed will chair the meeting on October 17 ahead of the world climate change summit in Copenhagen in December. The 14-member cabinet were taught scuba-diving basics over the weekend.

The cabinet will don wet suits and scuba equipment and dive to a depth of six metres. They will then ratify a pledge calling on other nations to slash greenhouse gas emissions ahead of the Copenhagen meeting. Cabinet members will communicate using whiteboards and hand signals. The Maldivian archipelago is on the front line of climate change.

A very nice and innovative gesture by the leaders of Malaysia. It goes to show that only words are not enough to tackle the climate change issue. Serious actions, which encourage the common man to act, are what is required from the world top leaders, for a global movement to save our dear planet.

So all those who have access to the decision makers of the nations, please urge them to act and act fast; for the time is not far before our dear earth becomes inhabitable and the scientists have not yet come up with an alternate earth where we can migrate to.

ACT NOW, PLEASE!!!

Chinese National Day

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

Today China celebrates it National Day. Congratulations to all the Chinese, all over the world (well you can find one in almost every corner of the world).

The Mao-led 1949 communist takeover ended years of foreign domination and war, while three decades of economic reforms initiated by late leader Deng Xiaoping enriched China and propelled it back into the ranks of world powers.

It formally kicked off mass celebrations of 60 years of communist rule on Thursday with a 60-gun salute that rung out across Beijing’s

historic Tiananmen Square.

China will glorify the nation’s six-decade revival as a global power with a tightly choreographed display of mass patriotism including a military parade and spectacular pageant depicting the Communist Party-led rebirth.

The Chinese authorities want to send a clear message: that China has re-emerged as an undeniable force in the world. Well it can’t be denied, given the fact that most of the products (right from low grade toys to high end electronics) these days carry the tag “Made in China” and people have got uses to them. They have proliferated in almost every sphere of daily life and one does use a “Made in China” product in his daily life.

The world cannot do without it and it’s image stand as solid as the famous Grand China wall.

Switch to 4-day week boosts productivity

Monday, September 14th, 2009

Converting a five-day work week into a four-day work would result in higher job satisfaction and lower levels of work-family conflict, thus leading to higher productivity.
The means to switch from five 8-hour days to four 10-hour days, meaning overall hours and salaries stay the same.
The hope was that by shutting down buildings for an extra day each week, energy bills would be slashed by up to a fifth.
Researchers have analysed the potential benefits of four-day work week transition and found that the employees were satisfied with their jobs, and enhanced productivity.
They found that even though four-day work week employees work the same number of hours per week as their traditional work-week counterparts, they reported being more satisfied with their jobs, compensation, and benefits , and were less likely to look for employment elsewhere in the next year.
With the four-day work schedule, employees were less likely to report that they come home too tired, that work takes away from personal interest, and that work takes time they would like to spend with family.
There are going to be very real benefits for employees, specifically decreased gas cost, decreased commute time (both because they only have to commute four days, but also because they will be commuting during off-peak times, so the commute could potentially be shorter each day), and hopefully, improved work-life balance.

All of us out here in Kuwait will love this 4-day week, more time for Diwaniyas, for shopping, for gossiping, for outing, for gettogethers, for picnics, for long fun drives, for quality time with loved ones, for improving relations between couples, for everything.

Post Eid holidays, this is an option the Parliament should seriously look into.

Read a book & £100,000 pounds cash

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

A property tycoon, Ben Benson, is giving away 1 million of his personal fortune to 10 readers of his first book, The New Rules of Wealth.
Benson, who has amassed a 60 million property portfolio, will give the readers £100,000 in cash each in the first giveaway of its kind, reported the Daily Telegraph on Monday . Benson, 34, who splits his time between luxury homes in London and Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, said: Ten people are going to get that money, irrespective of how many copies of the book we sell. My motivation with the book is not to make money. If it was, Id be using that 1million to start another company or buy a load of properties. The thing I really get excited about is helping people achieve what they want to achieve.
We will sell a lot of copies of this book, but I dont necessarily count things in terms of pounds and pence anymore. I wanted to do something different. This has never been done before.
Benson spoke to 200 entrepreneurs for his book. The New Rules of Wealth, which took him seven months to write, explodes what he believes are the myths surrounding wealth and provides rules for successful money-making .
Each copy of the book, which has not yet been printed, has a unique number. Benson will announce one number online every two months and the lucky owner of the corresponding book will get £100,000.

Madonna visits Queen Rania in Jordan

Friday, September 4th, 2009

rania_de_jordanie_reference

Apparently, Madonna has crossed over the dead sea on her trip to Israel to go visit Jordan. And who was there to receive her? None other than Queen Rania herself. This would be Madonna’s second reported visit to the Arab world. Back in the early 80s’ she went to Morocco to shoot something for a French TV channel and absolutely hated it. That is documented in Christopher Ciccone’s tell-all. That’s more than a quarter of a century ago.

She has taken inspiration from most cultures on earth, but she has yet to do so from the Arab world. She is probably there to visit the religious cites. Maybe, Petra and the baptism location on the river of Jordan. She should go to the Palestinian Territories and see the living conditions there. Oh, and Beirut for a grand old party.

Formula Zero is here, forget Formula 1 racing

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

Formula Zero is a first-ofits-kind hydrogen fuel cell racing series that launched its official racing history in collaboration with university design teams to build and race hydrogen-fueled , zero emission cars.

Top university teams from the Netherlands, UK, Belgium, and Spain competed with custom designed vehicles powered by hydrogen fuel cells at Surrey, England last month, at the Formula Zero 2009 Championship.

The Formula Zero championship stays true to its zero emissions claim. All the needed hydrogen is produced from renewable energy sources like solar, wind and biomass. A click and go high pressure cartridge allows for safe and easy refuelling at the pitstop. The hydrogen is converted into electricity in the kart, which can currently travel at a top speed of 70 kmph.
Each championship has a sprint race, where teams compete to see how fast their cars can go, and an endurance race, where teams are tested to see how reliable and efficient each car is. Teams are awarded points, which are tallied up at the end of the race to see who is in the lead. The Belgian team from Groep Leuven Engineering School is currently in first place, with EuplaTech, Spain in second, and Imperial College of London students are currently placed third.

The final phase of Formula Zero, the full-scale Circuit Edition , is scheduled for 2015, and will feature professional race cars comparable in every way to present-day Formula one racing, except that the vehicles will emit water vapour instead of carbon dioxide, with all energy used supplied by renewable resources.

So rejoice that soon cars will emit only water vapor instead of those obnoxious carbon monoxide and other harmful gases.
