Stupid Jew

A Jewish settler throws wine at a Palestinian woman in Hebron in the West Bank. Holy to both Jews and Muslims, the city is often the scene of violence. Castelnuovo captured the attack while photographing a celebration of the Jewish festival of Purim.

So, I stayed up ’til 6 am to watch Obama’s speech on live stream through YouTube and I must say it was worth it. Maybe, he came of as too catering to the expectations of the region and, maybe, he gave the conservatives in the US enough material to taunt him for the rest of his incumbency. But, to make recollection, there has never been a US President so humble, understanding and keen on helping the world as he is. It could be just propaganda, but that rhetoric is truly new territory for a President of the US and its foreign policy. He did his research and he looked as confident and direct as ever. It’s nice to have that after 8 years of buffoonery.

This could all be just great speech writers, but, nonetheless, if he is willing to say those things and “apologize” for certain things, that could only mean progress. He kept asking for a “New Beginning” and distancing himself from the atrocities of Bush and Cheney. He also commented on his Muslim roots. Even when it got a bit too monotheistic, the gist was delivered and there was a cherry on top of it – the part of his speech on women’s issues. It was unexpected, yet more than welcome. He stressed on choice. Maybe, it is a new day in politics for the region, who knows? I’m convinced.

Check out the reactions.

Obama’s speech to the Muslims & the world – Egypt

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

I quote Obama:

“We have a responsibility to join together on behalf of the world we seek – a world where extremists no longer threaten our people, and American troops have come home; a world where Israelis and Palestinians are each secure in a state of their own, and nuclear energy is used for peaceful purposes; a world where governments serve their citizens, and the rights of all God’s children are respected. Those are mutual interests. That is the world we seek. But we can only achieve it together.

I know there are many – Muslim and non-Muslim – who question whether we can forge this new beginning. Some are eager to stoke the flames of division, and to stand in the way of progress. Some suggest that it isn’t worth the effort – that we are fated to disagree, and civilizations are doomed to clash. Many more are simply skeptical that real change can occur. There is so much fear, so much mistrust. But if we choose to be bound by the past, we will never move forward. And I want to particularly say this to young people of every faith, in every country – you, more than anyone, have the ability to remake this world.

All of us share this world for but a brief moment in time. The question is whether we spend that time focused on what pushes us apart, or whether we commit ourselves to an effort – a sustained effort – to find common ground, to focus on the future we seek for our children, and to respect the dignity of all human beings.

It is easier to start wars than to end them. It is easier to blame others than to look inward; to see what is different about someone than to find the things we share. But we should choose the right path, not just the easy path. There is also one rule that lies at the heart of every religion – that we do unto others as we would have them do unto us. This truth transcends nations and peoples – a belief that isn’t new; that isn’t black or white or brown; that isn’t Christian, or Muslim or Jew. It’s a belief that pulsed in the cradle of civilization, and that still beats in the heart of billions. It’s a faith in other people, and it’s what brought me here today.

We have the power to make the world we seek, but only if we have the courage to make a new beginning, keeping in mind what has been written.

The Holy Koran tells us, “O mankind! We have created you male and a female; and we have made you into nations and tribes so that you may know one another.”

The Talmud tells us: “The whole of the Torah is for the purpose of promoting peace.”

The Holy Bible tells us, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.”

The people of the world can live together in peace. We know that is God’s vision. Now, that must be our work here on Earth. Thank you. And may God’s peace be upon you.”

Very powerful and meaningful words, ones’ that can belittle any religious preacher of the highest order.

Three cheers to Obama. There IS hope for the world.

Obama has over shadowed Osama.

Ahmadinejad does it again

Monday, April 20th, 2009

He actually makes me laugh. He’s kind of the Russell Brand of international politics because he really doesn’t care what he says or who he offends. I imagine he might be quite an amusing dinner guest in some respects…….

Diplomats have ’stormed out’ of a UN confab on racism as Uncle A began his diatribe against…..yes, you’ve guessed it…..Israel.

Sky News reported: ” Mahmoud Ahmadinejad accused Israel of being the “most cruel and racist regime”, causing angry Western diplomats to get up and leave the room.

In a rambling speech, Mr Ahmadinejad pointed a finger at the United States, Europe and Israel and accused them of destabilising the entire world.

Some European diplomats immediately walked out of the room when the Iranian president said Israel was created on the “pretext of Jewish suffering” in World War II.

A wigged protester shouting “Racist, racist” threw a soft red object at Mr Ahmadinejad, hitting the podium and interrupting his speech.” ( A Telletubbie? )

The funny thing is, it was the Swiss, hosting the Durban II anti racism meet who had actually invited Ahmadinejad to be their guest of honour……………………lol

Iran flips US the bird

Saturday, March 21st, 2009

Obama, after discussing his paranormal- sorry para Olympic bowling skills with Jay Leno the other day, did less than bowl over the Iranian regime…..no they don’t want to be friends, they don’t want to come visit, they don’t want to let bygones be bygones and all live together in California Dreamin’ hippy Utopia………..

” Mr Obama used a videotaped message to coincide with the festival of Norwuz - which means “new day” - to make the overture over the heads of Iran’s leaders, while also appealing to them to change their ways.

“So in this season of new beginnings I would like to speak clearly to Iran’s leaders,” he said. “We have serious differences that have grown over time. My administration is now committed to diplomacy that addresses the full range of issues before us, and to pursuing constructive ties among the United States, Iran and the international community.”

Doesn’t matter. They weren’t interested. And it was blocked on You Tube.

Then the Jews got on board- hot on the ‘ve vant to be zis Obama’s friend already, so ve copy zis und  vill do za Iranians embracing also.”

”President Shimon Peres of Israel issued an audio statement greeting “the noble Iranian people on behalf of the ancient Jewish people”.

LOLOLOL- the Jews HATE Iran as much as the Iranians hate the Jews. Who on earth is he trying to kid?

OK up for a BAFTA this year, for best supporting actor in a soap, ”Shimon Perez”……oh and happy April Fools’ Day.

Tracking Down Gaza War’s Deadly, Mysterious Cubes
By David Hambling February 24, 2009 | 11:21:49 AMCategories: Ammo And Munitions, Missiles, Sabras

An unidentified weapon packed with strange “cube shaped shrapnel” killed or wounded civilians in the recent Gaza war, according to a new report from Amnesty International.
Amnesty’s report on weapons used by both sides in Gaza finds much to condemn. The group is particularly hard on the U.S., having found numerous remains of American munitions — including white phosphorus shells from Pine Bluff Arsenal, and a Hellfire missile made in Orlando. Another weapon which bothers Amnesty is a mysterious munition, filled with cubic particles.

cube2_2

“Amnesty International delegates in Gaza also found evidence of the use of a new type of missile, seemingly launched from unmanned drones, which explodes large numbers of tiny sharp-edged metal cubes, each between 2 and 4 mm square in size. This purpose-made shrapnel can penetrate even thick metal doors and many were seen by Amnesty International’s delegates embedded deep in concrete walls. They appear designed to cause maximum injury…

Policy of Lies

Sunday, January 25th, 2009
How come this report in Al Qabas says that the summit was a success, and this report says it's mended the Arab-Arab relations, while both this one by VOA News and this one by BBC says something to the contrary?? I thought we were done with censorship and drum-beating in favor of political leaders, or was that a pipe dream after all?

Palestine: What is expected and what can be done?

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009
After the dust had settled, and the guns in Gaza are gradually falling silent - cautiously - one cannot escape the inevitable question: what's next? An Arab initiative, at least two Arab summits, various promises of assistance and relief, all's good, but the man whose home had been obliterated from the map and reduced to rubble is now living in a 2x2 tent right next to that rubble, along with

Friday, January 16th, 2009

So now it was an ‘error’……now please guys, get your stories right. A few hours ago you were claiming that you were being fired on from the UN compound and fired back in defence.

Now it is an ‘error’.

‘ ”WASHINGTON, Jan 16 (KUNA) — U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice late on Thursday said she spoke with the Israeli defense minister and Israeli foreign minister about Israeli artillery shells crashing into United Nations headquarters in the Gaza Strip, and was told it was “an error that happened.” “There is great concern on their part….We are principally concerned, of course, about the humanitarian situation …, ” Rice said. ‘

At this point in the story, I would like to introduce the Israeli Foreign minister and any random IDF spokesperson ( there seem to be so many) to the story of ‘ The Little Boy Who Cried Wolf ‘.

white phosphorous,the geneva convention,the idf

Thursday, January 15th, 2009

White phosphorus - phosphorus bombs and shells are incendiary weapons,  capable of causing serious burns or death. The agent will burst into burning flakes of phosphorus upon impact.White phosphorus weapons are controversial today because of their potential use against civilians.

On January the 15th a UN spokesman on the BBC reported that up to five WP shells had caused a fire in the UN compound in Gaza City, setting fire to aid pallettes and threatening fuel tankers which were also in the compound. He stated they were having trouble extingushing the fires as they only had water to fight them but WP needed sand to extinguish it.

White phosphorus can cause injuries and death in three ways: by burning deep into tissue, by being inhaled as a smoke, and by being ingested. Extensive exposure by burning and ingestion is fatal.

Under the Geneva Conventions, which are the statutory implementation of the customery laws of war, it is forbidden to deliberately attack civilians or bona-fide civilian structures, dwellings, and places used for civilian purposes, such as hospitals, religious structures, and schools. It therefore follows that the use of any form of weapon to deliberately attack civilians or deliberately attack unquestionably civilian targets unoccupied by military forces is a WAR CRIME, and in violation of the laws of war.

ISRAEL IS GUILTY.

Gaza death toll about to reach 1000

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

buscahamcol_hamas363It’s at 947 now. Two-thirds are civilians. The West is not doing anything and the East is quiet. This has got to stop. Israel knows very well that this culture of aggression will breed more violence, but they like crying “terrorist” whenever half a missile is dropped on them to get sympathy for their horrid cause. Treat humans humanely and then you might have good negotiations. What an atrocity!

new israeli ‘phase’

Saturday, January 10th, 2009

Israel have annouced they are moving to the next phase .. and are urging residents to stay away from hamas. what are they going to do?!

Where do u move to? How do u move away from ur neighbour? Into the streets? No.

Across the border? Sorry Mr Hosni Mubarak won’t allow that. So it looks like more slaughter of the innocents that the world will not see because journalists - in true Zimbabwe style- are barred access. Ironic that the only place journalists can broadcast from is geriatric homes in Israel…..

People have been told to ‘move to the centre of the city’- let’s see how many bombs are ‘accidentally’ dropped there.

Damn the IDF and all its leaders to hell.

Eastern holland to be annexed and given to displaced zimbabwians

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

Under an agreement between ENGLAND and EGYPT, large areas of eastern Holland are to be annexed and given to displaced white Zimbabwian farmers who can trace their ancestry back to The NETHERLANDS.

Dutch people presently living in this area will be asked to move out of their houses by noon on March 5th to make way for the new ’state’ which is to be called ‘Der HOMELAND’.

English and Egyptian government representatives have agreed that this is justified because of the turmoil white Zimbabwians have been put under by the evil Robert Mugabe. Residents of the eastern Holland area have not been asked how they feel about the imminent annexation.

Yeah……Take yourself back to 1967 and just imagine what it was like to be a Palestinian…..

Why the West doesn’t care about Gaza…

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

gaza_strip_may_2005

I read this good article on Truthdig.com about the West’s indifference to the Palestinian cause. It struck a chord. The death toll now over 600 and the wounded are over 3000. It’s one thing to strike because you are an occupied territory without freedoms and have dire standards of living, it’s another to struck to showcase  your muscle-power. Both crimes, but they are not equal.

So the latest is that the IDF are saying the 40 killed at the UN schools were, in fact not killed by Israeli artillery fire , but by a Hamas booby trap…….

Israel bombs school,40 dead…..but the dog lives, so it’s ok.

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

Can anyone see the irony of SKY News showing a story of how a guy in Manchester jumped in icy water to save a dog from death, while the ticker tape across the bottom of the screen tells us how 40 civilians have been murdered in a bomb attack by Israel on a UN controlled school?

My heart broke this morning as I read the Arab Times and saw the frontpage picture of the three little children all under 4 lying side by side, dead on the floor of a hospital in Gaza. Any one of those children could have been mine or yours, little faces torn with pain, tummies peeping out under jerseys too short - they could have been asleep if it hadn’t have been for the  blood stained trousers….. and the father wailing in disbelief next to their little bodies.

These are war crimes, without a doubt, perpetrated on the Arab people in general and the Palestinian people in particular by a crazed regime, an axis of evil called Israel. This is our 21st century holocaust.

With over 500 Palestinian dead, and by hospital accounts, the majority of whom are children one wonders if the Israeli plan is to eliminate an entire generation of Palestinians? Have they created their own ‘final solution’? Is it a case of eradicate the children and there will be no one left to fight us?

‘…There has been a massive loss of life….unacceptable…….doing everything possible’ said  some random UK MP , who has probably never ever been to the Middle East, but refuused to condemn the attack.

We want action, not soundbites.

We want pictures of smiling children, not blody remains of toddlers with their heads blown off.

If Milosovic was so guilty…….is not Perez? Is not Tilvi herself a candidat for prosecution? Israel’s very own Eva Braun.

This needs to end, now. We cannot sit back and do nothing while the IDF flout the Geneva convention and go from house to house in Gaza killing, not taking, prisoners, but shooting them in the head.

Wake up America! You haven’t seen the pictures, seek them out, see the carnage for yourself.

Come on UK- at least condemn the bloody attacks.

And come on GCC, come on, come on, come on…….

    http://www.tuesdayschild.ie/

This is a Belfast based charity which sponsors children in need around the world. They helped out in Gaza last year and as a result of the massacre which is being perpetrated by the Israeli government at the moment, they are again lending a hand. Worth checking out.

(Sorry for the graphic imagery, but here is a story which cannot be ignored )

rania gives her own blood

Friday, January 2nd, 2009

AMMAN: Jordan’s Queen Rania donated blood yesterday for Palestinians in the battered Gaza Strip, where more than 350 people have been killed in a deadly four-day Israeli aerial bombardment. “Queen Rania visited the Al-Hussein Medical Centre today to take part in a nationwide campaign to donate blood and support the citizens of Gaza,” her office said in a statement. In an article published in local newspapers, Rania, herself of Palestinian origin, also called on Jordanians to help ease the suffering.

To be limited to expressing sympathies with the people of Gaza is shameful because they don’t need to be felt sorry for, they need us to act and help, and I know that we can do more,” wrote the queen.”

day of wrath

Friday, January 2nd, 2009

Hamas leaders have called for a ‘day of wrath’ against the Israeli oppressors today after one of their leaders and his family were killed in a bomb attack. This was state sponsored terrorism at its ‘best’ . The house in which the Hamas leader was living was undoubtedly targeted and bombed, regardless of whom was living there. Weapons in a mosque? I doubt it- just another excuse to show their disdain for Islam.

And so the world waits, the US does nothing and world leaders hum and hah about ‘humanitarian disasters’.

Last night watching BBC, my 4 year old wanted to know why the little boy on the TV was covered with blood and why the little girl was crying.

‘The nasty men droped a bomb on their house’, I told him and his little face crumbled .

”[2.120] And the Jews will not be pleased with you, nor the Christians until you follow their religion. Say: Surely Allah’s guidance, that is the (true) guidance. And if you follow their desires after the knowledge that has come to you, you shall have no guardian from Allah, nor any helper.”

[5.13] But on account of their breaking their covenant We cursed them and made their hearts hard; they altered the words from their places and they neglected a portion of what they were reminded of; and you shall always discover treachery in them excepting a few of them; so pardon them and turn away; surely Allah loves those who do good (to others).”

Israel and UK crossline

Thursday, January 1st, 2009

The leaders in Israel and the UK seem to have a crossline somewhere- earlier today an’Israeli spokesman’ said there was no need for a ceasefire to let aid through as ‘there was no humanitarian problem’……then this on SKY News tonight:

” UK PM Gordon Brown said: “It is vital that moderation must now prevail - there’s a humanitarian crisis.”

Aid is now getting through to the Palestinian territory, he added.

“I have talked to the prime minister of Israel and had assurances from him that there will be access for humanitarian reasons to get stocks in, to get supplies to people in Gaza and to help with the casualties,” Mr Brown said”..

Lies, lies and more damned lies.

Dubai New Year celebrations cancelled

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, ruler of UAE,  announced to cancel all events for the New Year celebrations.

I say:

Rather than cancel the events, the organisers should be made to contribute towards the repair and damage that the gazans have sufferred. Also they could tie a black band to show their solidarity. In fact they need to dedicate these events to the welfare of those affected. Just showing plain solidarity, by cancelling these celebratory events (those who are affected by the cancellations will definitely have a grudge; no matter how small or big). So a positive contribution that helps those affected to recover, will be appreciated by all.

Obama silent on Israel attacks

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

Obama did not speak out in the Israel attacks. Instead he said that “there is only one president at a time”. This is politically correct and also diplomatic if he does not want to speak his mind.

But the Arab community, which sees him as a brother with “Muslim roots” and hence understanding the situation, expects much more from him. At least he can speak as common man, rather than as a president incumbent. His coronation day is not far off which will automatically put the responsiblity on him.

Violence, of all sorts, needs to be condemned, whether as an aggression or retaliatory. So Obama show your strong character and speak out. The world looks forward to you.

State Terrorism- embassy warned

Monday, December 29th, 2008

Protests have been held outside the Israeli Embassy in London- memories of the late 70s and early 80s and the South African Embassy.

Barriers were torn down and riot police were brought in to control the 500-plus demonstrators as tempers flared.

Palestinians and their supporters waved flags and placards and chanted: “Five, six, seven, eight - Israel is a terror state.”

Among the protestors at the embassy, in High Street Kensington, was Gamal Hamed whose 23-year-old son still lives in Gaza.

Mr Hamad said: “Yesterday was the bloodiest day in my homeland’s history. We will do what we can to make the world take notice.”

He added: “I am delighted by the number of people who have pledged their support today - we are all worried about where the conflict goes from here.”

Slaughter of the Innocents

Monday, December 29th, 2008

600px-matteo_di_giovanni_002

In our Lectionary readings for today we pray for the Innocents, slaughtered by King Herod, in the land that is now Israel.

PRAYER (traditional language)
We remember this day, O God, the slaughter of the holy innocents of Bethlehem by the order of King Herod. Receive, we beseech thee, into the arms of thy mercy all innocent victims; and by thy great might frustrate the designs of evil tyrants and establish thy rule of justice, love, and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

There is nothing so maddening as to be helpless to intervene in the huge crush of political events among nations. On the other hand, we have been given this very powerful weapon - prayer - and the knowledge that God can do anything, and that he listens to our prayers, especially prayers for the weak, the helpless, women and children.

We can also raise our voices where it counts - to our governments - to say “this is wrong” and “this must be stopped.”

This is wrong. This must be stopped.

It is neither good nor right for bullies to impose their will on those with less power, just because they can. (That applies also to my own country.) It is not good for the victims - but it is also not good for the health of the bully! Countries where minority rights are not considered find themselves weakened from internal disorders, like a body eaten with cancer. If minorities can be likened to bacteria - a little bacterial makes us healthier and stronger. Tolerance of diversity makes us as nations healthier and stronger.

Don’t you wonder what might be accomplished if the Palestinians and Israelis could find some way to live together in peace?

Isareli Nazis

Monday, December 29th, 2008

Their memory is short- they moan and groan about the holocaust. I for one am fed up with it. We can’t forget it. They never let us, but it seems they have. Over the past 7 years 40 Jewish settlers ( settlers in land, by the way, that doesn’t belong to them) have been fatalities of Hamas rockets……40 too many, yes, but in retaliation in the past ONE day, the Israelis have murdered 300 Palestinians.

COME ON BUSH. What is YOUR answer? Are you going to sort out the (Jewish) ‘ butchers of Tel Aviv’ the same way you were so quick to sort out the (Muslim) Butcher of Baghdad?

No didn’t think so- too busy worrying about your imaginary axis of evil. Can I point you in the right direction towards the real axis of evil? I’ll give you a clue…..it starts with an I and ends with an L…head to the promised land, look for some starving and murdered families, cross over the border and there you are.

The Israelis claim they have to change the ‘equation’ on the ground…..I think they need a crash course in Maths. At present the Israeli equation isn’t balanced.

Gaza Airstrikes: Al Qaida, Hamas and Arab Logic

Sunday, December 28th, 2008
The latest atrocities within the occupied territories is by all measures simply terrible, no two people on Earth can say otherwise. But considering that Hamas nullified the previously brokered truce with Israel earlier this month, and as a result, launched it's puny home-made rockets against their enemies concurrently, it comes as no surprise that Israel retaliates in this way. Add to that mix

israeli bastards

Saturday, December 27th, 2008

So again Israel bombs Arabs/ Muslims with impunity.

200 dead - are we going to have a war on terror against them? No , I doubt it- the Bush strong arm doesn’t wrap around Jews, does it? How quickly they forget their own ‘holocaust’ and how quickly they desire to inflict another on the palestinian nation.

Happy hanukah-not.

Sarah Palin- fiddling on the huzpah

Saturday, September 27th, 2008

So Ms Palin and her red swimsuit should be receiving her complimentary Israeli passport around now.

She says we shouldn’t ’second guess Israel’ and she displays an Israeli flag in her office in chilly baked Alaska.

Apparently because of her ’staunch Christian faith’ she holds Israel, and Judaism in particular, in great esteem. She considers the preservation of the state of Israel a biblical imperative- and presumably the destruction of either an Iranian one or a Palestinian one just as important.

Hello, Sarah. Not wishing to sound anti Israeli, anti Zionist nor anti Jewish, but have you read your bible lately?

Who were the co conspirators in handing over Jesus to the authorities?

Who basically ‘killed’ him ( should you believe in Christianity )?

How were most biblical prophets treated by the Jewish authorities at the time?

II Chronicles 36:16 states: “But they (Jews/Israelites) mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and misused his prophets, until the wrath of the Lord arose against his people (jews/israelites), till there was no remedy”.

Acts 7:52- “Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted and they have slain them which showed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers”.

But it’s up to you Sarah, coz you da big boss lady, hallelujah.

The Caterpillar that will never turn into a butterfly

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

A poster here, Bog Raver ( check out his site for an insight into the Beirut of the UK, Belfast ) has brought to my attention the fact that Caterpillar  ( shoes and fashion etc ) supply the Israeli army with bulldozers.

These same bulldozers are demolishing Palestinian homes on a daily basis, to make way for illegal settlers.

Perhaps we should have a unified boycott of all Caterpillar products?

Back to Reality

Sunday, August 10th, 2008
The realities in international chess-playing Iran are analyzed today by Bernard Avishai and Reza Aslan for the Washington Post.

While the notorious Bush Administration seems to be less willing in its last days to launch an attack on nuclear facilities in Iran, Israel still tackles the pros and cons. The arguments again and again circulate around the Iranian President and his unacceptable rhetoric. But that wiping-off-the-map ado has long been debunked as an intentionally wrong translation of a president’s not really diplomatic show-off who is not really the leader of the country. As Avishai and Aslan correctly state, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who alone commands Iran’s military and dictates foreign policy, has adopted a much softer tone with regard to nuclear negotiations with the West. Through his Vice President Esfandiar Rahim Mashaie, a close confidant of the President, the US was described recently as “one of the best nations in the world”. “Today, Iran is friends with American and Israeli people. No nation in the world is our enemy, this is an honor.” I had reported on that surprising turn in the Iranian Government recently elsewhere. So, Mr. Ahmadinejad is definitely not the strong leader as he would like to be seen. When recently asked in an interview by NBC, who leads Iran, his foreseeable answer was elusive.

Avishai and Aslan go even further. It may be clear in the meantime that the ‘fundamentalist’ caricature of the Mullah regime seeking, via the return of the Mahdi, the doomsday, the apocalypse, suicide and whatsoever is a ridiculous invention of interested circles in the West for preparing the public for possible military actions. The regime in Tehran desperately wants to survive. And moreover, why should they risk a co-destruction of the Palestinian territories by ‘wiping-off the map’ Israel by atomic bombs? But Tehran’s nuclear program (let’s assume it is not only for peaceful purposes) is far more modest than its leaders like to admit.

Avishai and Aslan list further arguments why it is, in their view, unlikely that Iran is or would be a threat for Israel or other countries in the region. Of course, knowing all that will not stop Mr. Ahmadinejad blustering. But who cares? The only way out of the dilemma is diplomacy.

Not Pushing Iran into a Corner

Thursday, August 7th, 2008
There is a lot of talk about a missed deadline these days when it comes to Iran’s nuclear issue. On July 19, the 5+1 talks with Iran’s top nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili took place with a surprise appearance of William J. Burns, America’s new Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs. Unfortunately, he was not supposed to take part in the discussions. But anyhow, the mere fact that he listened to the Iranian standpoints was quite a sensation after almost 30 years of the American-Iranian ice age. The talks had been characterized as very constructive by both parties although the 5+1 did not get a definite answer with regard to their rather generous offer in case of freezing the uranium enrichment by the Iranians. According to Reuters, Javier Solana and Saeed Jalili agreed upon further telephone contacts within the next two weeks or so. There was no deadline set or mentioned.

A self-fulfilling prophecy: that is what most observers expected when Burns had been sent to Geneva. Let him be witness in useless talks and then give a green light for an air strike. It was absolutely clear from the beginning that no immediate decision upon the freeze for freeze offer of 5+1 could be expected. In fact, immediately after the talks, Jalili ruled out further discussions with regard to a freeze of the enrichment program. The June 16 offer is, by the way, a modification of the 2006 package of incentives for suspending uranium enrichment. After decades of betrayal and mutual mistrust, one must understand that Iran won’t accept any solution which would make it dependent on Western technology. The Iranian position here is very clear. It would be helpful in further discussions when the West understands that the red line, i.e., abandonment of uranium enrichment, cannot be crossed. On the other hand, Iran has to make clear that it does not threaten any country, not even Israel.

Of course, there is obviously much propaganda here but when the Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad visited the nuclear plant in Natanz in April this year and inspected the new centrifuges, he left the mark of a curious child which had got somehow lost in the deep forest. That doesn’t make him more sympathetic, of course. But a transparent enrichment program safeguarded by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) would not threaten anybody. That Agency under Director General Mohamed ElBaradei has to be strengthened, its indispensable work supported not sabotaged as was the case when Israel bombed an alleged nuclear site in Syria last September.

Bigotry in the Classroom

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

Kuwait Times, 5th August 2008,

”The United States has revoked the visas of three Palestinian Fulbright scholars whose cases were taken up personally by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice after Israel refused to let them leave Gaza for interviews, US officials said Monday. Visas for the three, along with a fourth Palestinian student from Gaza who had hoped to come to the US under a different program, were approved after Rice intervened in June but were rescinded last week when “new information” about them was received, the of
ficials said. “There were four Palestinians who were issued visas about whom we then received additional information,” State Department spokesman Gonzalo Gallegos said.”

Yes, no doubt the ”new information” was fabricated as a cover for the plain fact that the Israelis want as few well educated palestinians around as possible- makes containment easier.

”….. (an) official familiar with the situation said the information related to security issues that were behind the refusal by Israeli authorities to allow them to leave Gaza to be interviewed for visas at the US Consulate in Jerusalem in May.”

Amber Light

Sunday, July 13th, 2008
No ‘green light’, of course. Amber means, go ahead with your preparations. Even worse is that President G. W. Bush has told the Israeli government “that he may be prepared to approve a future military strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities if negotiations with Tehran break down”, TimesOnline is quoting a senior Pentagon offical today.

This is despite Bush’s own generals’ reservation as regards foreseeable disastrous military, political, and economic consequences of a new adventure in the Middle East. Running out of time for a President of the sole superpower can definitely not be a good reason for Israel of waging war on Iran. There are hardly believable rumors even saying that the last time window for destroying nuclear plants in Natanz, Esfahan or Arak is after the U.S. presidential election on November 2, 2008 and before adjuration of the elected President on January 20, 2009. That would, in fact, be hijacking the elected President’s own initiatives. Completely bizarre and irrational.

Considering the fabricated pictures of missile tests in Iran’s desert last week one may wonder how serious the Iranian ‘war games’ actually were, which were perceived in the West, of course, provocative and unwarranted, frankly violating UN Security Council Resolutions. Let’s hope that Iran’s bark is worse than its bite. And that of Israel’s, too. While the Jerusalem Post vaunted last week that Israel warplanes had been operating in the airspace over Iraq, Iraq’s Ministry of Defense had to dismiss that report later.

It is a shrill cacophony these days. On all sides.

Not so private secrets

Friday, June 6th, 2008

Intlxpatr’s comment regarding postsecret today reminded me about this not so private secret I found on campus last year, which really wasn’t post worthy until I listened to Barack Obama’s AIPAC speech that I found on Salimya’s blog.. and then I got to thinking about not so private secrets in the world, secrets that many people choose to ignore much like the carvings on that tree. Finally I found this video with replies by George Galloway, a rock star politician from the UK and decided I had to make a post out of the whole mess and let you figure things out yourself. If you don’t know George Galloway already you should get to know him, and read his books. Mr. Galloway Goes to Washington was short, funny, and very insightful.

lol. I just found this interesting quote on the same topic by Saeb Erekat, the chief Palestinian negotiator. Aljazeera English website:

“I say to Obama … please stop being more Israeli than the Israelis themselve”

Peace in the middle east!

West Bank Story

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

West Bank Story is a humorous short film that tells the tale of a Muslim Palestinian girl, Fatima, and a Jewish Israeli soldier, David, who fall in love. To their misfortune, both of their families own competing restaurants, Hummus Hut and Kosher King, and fight regularly. This makes it exceptionally difficult for the two to be together.

Undoubtably, the film’s got quite a daring—if not controversial— story line, superb directing, astounding lively musicals, and a talented cast of actors overall. I wasn’t surprised to read that it had one several, “Best Short Film” awards.

You can watch the entire video over at Sou’s Blog. :)
