Every night as part of my diet I am allowed to only eat grilled food and veggies. After the gym the most convenient thing for me to pick up is grills from either Turkish Grill, Kebabji or Villa Fayrouz Express. I usually call them from the gym parking lot and by the time I get to them the food is ready for me to pick up. Recently Kebabji increased their prices which annoyed me since their main competitors offered more for less. I decided to put up this post in hopes of someone from Kebabji reads this and realizes they need to go back to their old pricing.
Below are the three restaurants with some figures I took so I could compare them. The weight of the meat was calculated by placing just the meat on a digital scale and not the whole box. I ordered the exact same dishes from the three restaurants, grilled tikka meat and a side of tabbouleh.
Turkish Grill
Grilled Meat Tikka Cost: KD2.000
Pieces of meat: 15
Weight of meat: 175grams
Tabbouleh Cost: 600fils
Weight of tabbouleh: 272grams
Telephone: 25752565
Villa Fayrouz Express
Grilled Meat Tikka Cost: KD1.950
Pieces of meat: 19
Weight of meat: 196grams
Tabbouleh Cost: 850fils
Weight of tabbouleh: 508grams
Telephone: 25755527/32
Kebabji
Grilled Meat Tikka Cost: KD2.390
Pieces of meat: 12
Weight of meat: 66grams
Tabbouleh Cost: 950fils
Weight of tabbouleh: 295grams
Telephone: 1861616
I took the liberty to plug the figures above into a table for easier comparison. I highlighted the best prices and weight in green while I used red for the worst prices and weight. As you can see Villa Fayrouz Express surprisingly came out to be the best deal. I said surprisingly since between the three it’s actually the least fast foodish. Kebabji on the other hand didn’t fare too well. They had the most expensive prices and the least quantity.

I passed by the Kuwait’s got talent exhibition tonight at Villa Moda and there were 2 things that I fell in love with. When i first came in, there was a little cute pink corner for “Nat Bakes” with boxes of cupcakes and cookies which of course was the first thing that caught my eye since I’m a huge fan of cupcakes and because my name is Nat. I grabbed a couple a tiny cupcake samplers, a red velvet recommended by a friend and the chocolate coconut cupcake. Both were delicious and surprisingly way better than the cupcakes I tried at Magnolia’s Bakery when I was in New York. I wanted to try all the different flavors but managed to stop myself. As I was moving on I saw the cutest cookie monster cupcakes ever with an actual real cookie in its mouth. The cupcake prices were very decent as well ranging from KD6 to KD8 per dozen depending on the kind of cupcakes. They currently just deliver and you can visit their website www.natbakeswithlove.com for more information.
The second thing that caught my eye was a little corner for local designer Ascia AL Faraj and her local concept Twenty Ten. She had these amazing scarves on display which I just fell in love with. The colors she had on display were vibrant and summery. I didn’t get anything tonight, but I’m going back tomorrow to pick up a couple. Twenty Ten doesn’t have a website yet but they do have a Facebook group which you can check by clicking [Here]. The scarves are also available in my secret closet boutique in Karizma, Sharq. You can email twenty.ten.q8@gmail.com for more info.
There were ten booths in total but only these two caught my interest since the rest were not my style. The exhibition ends on August 1st, check Mark’s previous post for details.

My friend Alia wanted to have a brunch at her house, and she was out of time and ideas so I suggested she get stuff such as muffins, bread loafs, sandwiches…etc from Baking Tray. I did not specify anything except for the cookies. She went ahead and did the order – Next day she tells me about Baking Tray Date Muffin! I have never tried this muffin, but kept day dreaming about it in the office all morning till I decided I have to give it a shot… and I did
– THANK YOU ALIA!! I am now going almost daily just to get this muffin!! LOL – I blame you and thank you at the same time

Let me tell you something about me.. I am more of a cookie person than I am for muffins & cakes, I actually am a SUCKER FOR COOKIES that I have been nicknamed “Cookie Monster” since a very young age hehehe. This muffin is another story now!! Another thing about me is that I have always hated dates and anything with dates. My dad tried so hard throughput the years to make me love it but only manged to few years ago! Why did I hated dates without even trying them? They are SO GOOD!!! So good that I feel sorry I hated’em all those years… now back to the subject – Baking Tray Date Muffins….
They are fabulous! Golden brown in color, topped with some actual date shred, and with date rich content. I usually eat muffin tops but I eat this whole sucker! It became my daily snack at work! Hell yeah, I packed some for home because I kept talking about it and my sister wanted to try some – she also -not a cake person- fell in love with’em!

Still soft and yummy the next morning!

They are dangerously addictive!!
Baking Tray is located in Burj Mishaal in Sharq and their tel # is 22251544 (Map)

Noticed today they closed up an area next to IKEA, I am guessing this is the location of the second Pinkberry branch.
Update: I just got a confirmation, this is the new location of the second Pinkberry. Nothing still on Shake Shack.

I’m the type that likes to try cuisines from the globe. One thing about London is the multi-cultural atmosphere. You’ll find restaurants from many nationalities, and many are really good.
When I speak of foreign restaurants in Kuwait, since it is an Arabic country, I don’t consider other arab restaurants as foreign, so I won’t talk about Arabic restaurants that I visit in London (that doesn’t mean that I despise them, quite the contrary, I would do anything to have a falalfel sandwich from Canary restaurant!). Instead, Kuwait is dominated by the American cuisine and fast food restaurants and culture generally (with my utmost respect to my American friends, I mean no offense). Rarely you’ll find other cuisines such as African, Eastern European, Asian (with the exception of Indian food which is abundant here….and tasty).
I have like an archive of pics of restaurants I tried in London (this year and in the past). I never got to post them in the blog, and I’ll try to as much as possible. Here is one of the restaurants which is called Arianna. It is an Afghani restaurant and offers really delicious food.
First how to get there:
- By Underground: Central (Red) line, OR, District (Green) line to the station called “Mile End” in “Zone 2″. When you exit, turn left and walk straight ahead till you reach Burdett Road. Cross the street and you’ll see the sign “Mile End Park” slightly to your left. Walk that path for 2-3 minutes and you’ll see the restaurant.
NOTE: My apologies to everyone, but I do not use the bus often, so I’m unsure which number takes you there. I’m an underground, elusive person
Now the pics:

Arianna Restaurant
I believe the language here is Urdu or Persian, although I managed to read it. At this point, I convey my apologies to my fellow Arabs, since the name Arianna is an explicit word for us (no, I shall not write the meaning…..find out on your own!). I wonder what it means in their language? If you haven’t noticed, then it’s my mind that’s messed up
)
Below are images from inside…very exotic and appealing:

And now…the best part…….FOOOD!!
Appetizers
Shabzi: Soup consisting of noodles, kidney beans, chickpeas, and other types of beans. I know where I’ll go for Ramadan!
Barun Banjan: Aubergine (egg plant) mixed with tomatoes and onions, with yoghurt and sprinkled with mint.

Main meal:
Bantoo: Minced meat wrapped in dough and smothered with what I think is a bean sauce

Ashak: Similar to bantoo, but vegetarian, dough stuffed with cabbage and other wholesome veggies, with yoghurt and red peppers, and onions.

Qibali Pilau: Very simply…..machboos la7am

The food was absolutely delicious, the atmosphere was cozy and I was lucky to have been there when it wasn’t so crowded. I recommend this restaurant, try it.
Finally, I just want to say that, although this restaurant is situated in an area not in the “oxford street or knitsbridge or bayswater or queensway vicinity”, doesn’t mean you can’t venture out and see new places. That’s right, I’m talking to my Kuwaiti peers! (I can’t speak about other nationalities). Most Kuwaitis don’t, and sometimes refuse to go out of the radar of those areas. But there is potential; I’m seeing a lot of the Kuwaiti youth (and adults) with their back packs, and exploring London. Mashallah, it’s great to see them out there, and not just shopping or hanging out at cafés smoking shisha (ugh!
) on Edgware road (double ugh
), watching the people pass by and fending off the beggars who claim they are Muslims. Yes, some places take time to reach (if 30 min. is a lot!), but in the end, it’s worth it, especially with friends and family.

I used to love these canned chips! Though i was never a fan of the Hot Sauce ‘Tabasco or Daqoos BuDeech’… the other day i was at the Ma67ana when i saw the two of them right next to each other and i snapped that shot…
I took the chips alone… they were as horrible as i remember them… something about their taste… a fierce sour aftertaste… ble5!
Where you a fan of those chips? With or Without Daqoos?

I have an anniversary coming up September 6th – 4 years of blogging. Two moves, and there are days I can’t believe I am still blogging. There are days, also, when I can’t understand why you keep reading so faithfully.
I am trying not to spend so much time on the ‘net. It’s conscious. I want to focus on living my life, not living vicariously through others. I check messages in the morning and evening, and I do my bible readings. Blogging is over and above. Research – for purchases, for trips, etc – that’s allowed. YOU still have a high priority.
Here are the three cakes I am considering for the 4 year blogaversary:

It is amazing how much time you can waste . . . just looking for the right cake for an imaginary celebration.
Which do you prefer? Why?

I would first like to apologize for my long absence from the world of blogging and greatly appreciate all my supporting readers for being patient and understanding. Moreover, I’d also like to send my sincerest apologies to those of you who have emailed me but haven’t recieved a reply. I’d like to thank you all for putting up with my crap and style of writing, which by-the-way will only get worse. I’ve stated this a million times. If you’re not cool with my writing nature, then don’t read me. I should warn you, though; you’re going to miss out on some epic nutrition advice.
Before I begin preaching, I’d like to clarify how this guide will work:
1) I’ll list down all the basics of Ramadan eating and training to provide a brief understanding for the readers.
2) The reader will then post his/her goal, physical stats (height, weight, bf % if available) and Ramadan lifestyle (exercise timing, family gatherings, favorite/worst foods, etc).
3) I will then reply with a customized optimal plan for that reader’s goal
4) Other readers/haters who are too lazy to comment/hate can read/[go-kill-themselves] the Q&A’s below so that they may personally implement on their own.
The Q&A below will serve as a guide to unanswered questions anyone might have about Ramadan. Please refrain from emailing me since the goal of this post is to publicly educate through the written facts/opinions/experiences and the associated comments.

Credibility and Experience
It took me around 3 Ramadans to fully understand how my body works when it comes to losing fat and maintaining muscle when fasting. From eating small portions of food to indulging in every calorie dense food item, I’ve realized the only way to survive Ramadan is by doing the exact same thing.
1st Attempt: I dieted in Ramadan, performing 30-60 minutes of cardio 2 hours prior to breaking my fast, and weight lifting 1 hour after a light futoor, followed by a light dinner and a light suhoor.
Result: Managed to lose 10kg in 1 month.
Damage: Managed to lose a lot of my hard earned muscle. Fail.
2nd Attempt: I gorged on endless calories, weight-lifted with less intensity and did absolutely no cardio.
Result: Gained 5kg.
Damage: 5kg of fat; but I kept my muscle. Epic fail.
3rd Attempt: Dieted 3 months prior to Ramadan (low calorie intake, 60 minutes of cardio, 30-45 minutes of weight-lifting). Stuck to the same level of calorie intake and workout-intensity in Ramadan, eliminated cardio completely.
Result: Nothing. Kept my muscle, maintained my superb condition.
Damage: Refer to the above. Boo-Yeah.
Brief Highlights of Ramadan and How they may Benefit/Hinder You
- Fasting will start at around (and an average of) 3:30-4:00 am, a period VERY critical for all of us, but significantly to those who want to maintain muscle mass. You may want to get in as much water as possible 15 minutes prior to eating, then indulging in a select amount/content of food depending on your physical goal.
- Do not indulge in any vigorous physical activity from 4:00 am to 2 hours prior to breaking your fast. Severe dehydration is not a laughing matter and should be avoided as much as possible. To further stimulate fat-loss, a 30-60 minute cardio session 1-2 hours prior to breaking your fast will do wonders. For those who want to maintain muscle-mass, refrain from weight-lifting while fasting. I cannot stress how STUPID it is to be weight-lifting when your body is deprived of much needed nutrients. Moreover, low-intensity cardio 30-60 minutes prior to fasting plus a few exercises for your midsection will keep fat storage at bay.
- Content is VERY critical when breaking your fast and will be explained below in detail and in accordance to each individual’s goal.
- If you’re planning on gaining muscle mass while fasting then I’d suggest you stop. The time between breaking your fast and fasting is too short, and stuffing your face with huge amounts of food within that time frame will only widen your waist. Focus on NOT losing the hard-earned muscle you’ve exhaustively built throughout the year.
- Remember how you trained when you built those 5kg of muscle? Train the EXACT same way in Ramadan. Lowering the intensity and poundage would only prove counterproductive.
- Below you’ll find a “go pray and come back” in between breaking your fast and eating a solid meal. This short time period will serve you well by minimizing hunger.
Goal #1: Fat-Loss
1) As stated above, a 30-60 minute session of cardio (abdomen exercises every-other-day are optional) 1-2 hours prior to breaking your fast will help boost your metabolism and burn unwanted stubborn fat stores. Since you’re pretty much on an empty stomach, stored fat is readily burned when performed at this time, ensuring moderate to minimal dehydration depending on cardio intensity.
2) Futoor: Since blood-sugar levels are low and our bodies are dehydrated, opt to drink 1 glass of water followed by 3, 5, or 7 dates. (Odd numbers of dates in accordance to Al-Sunnah).
a. Option 1: Drink 1 glass of water plus 5 dates, go pray, come back and indulge in a green salad plus a moderate portion of lean chicken, red meat or fish (5-6oz)
b. Option 2: Drink 1 glass of water, go pray, come back and indulge in 1-cup of Harees (plus 1 tbsp of Cinnamon sugar, also known as “darseen”) or Yireesh, a green salad and a small portion of lean chicken, red meat or fish. (3-4oz)
c. Option 3 (Optimal): 1 glass of water, 7 dates and a glass (250ml) of Skimmed Laban.
3) Dessert: Since Ramadan season is well-known for releasing creatures devouring ridiculous amounts of sweets, wait 3 hours after breaking your fast and indulge in a moderate sized dessert plus a cup of Green, White or Black Tea OR 3-5 shots of Arabic Coffee. Feel free to ask me which desserts to eat, including the preferred quantities.
4) Dinner – 3 hours after the dessert above, this meal has to be super light since Suhoor (pre-fasting meal) will be somewhat heavy:
a. Option 1: Moderate bowl of vegetable, lentil or any non-creamy soup, plus a small to moderate amount of lean chicken, red meat or fish.
b. Option 2: Large bowl of green salad plus a moderate amount of lean chicken, red meat or fish
c. Option 3 (I personally don’t prefer this): 1 Fruit plus 10 pieces of raw almonds, walnuts or cashews.
5) Suhoor – This meal has to last you at least 6 hours after you’ve consumed it. This does not imply that you ingest copious amounts of food. The foods below are proven to be “time-released”, thus staying in your stomach and satisfying your hunger for a minimum of 6 hours.
a. Option 1: 1 glass (250ml) of low-fat Laban with 3 dates.
b. Option 2: 1-cup of low-fat cottage cheese with 1/2 cup of berries.
c. Option 3: 200g of lean red meat (filet mignon, tenderloin) plus a bowl of green veggies.
6) Water Intake: Drink as much water as humanly POSSIBLE. Be sure to consume water 15 minutes prior and after any meal or snack. Consume 1 liter of water in between meals and snacks to ensure that you’ve fulfilled your H20 quota.
Goal #2: Muscle-Mass Maintenance
1) 30-60 minute session of LOW-INTENSITY cardio plus abdomen exercises 1 hour prior to breaking your fast if and only if you have a few kilos of fat lying around.
2) Futoor:
a. Option 1: 1 glass of water plus 5 dates, go pray, come back and consume 1-cup of Harees (plus 1 tablespoon of Cinnamon sugar) or 1-cup of Yireesh, a bowl of green salad, plus a moderate amount of lean chicken, fish or red meat. (5-6oz)
b. Option 2 (Only choose this option if you have a hard time gaining muscle mass): 1 glass of water, 7 dates, 1 glass of low-fat Laban (I don’t recommend this unless you’re OK with bloating), go pray, come back and consume 1-cup of Harees (plus 1 tablespoon of Cinnamon sugar) or 1-cup of Yireesh, a bowl of green salad, plus a moderate amount of lean chicken, fish or red meat. (5-6oz)
c. Option 3 (this is mine, which means it’s optimal): 1 glass of water, 1-cup of Harees (2 tbsp of Cinnamon sugar), go pray, come back and consume a bowl of green salad, plus a moderate amount of lean chicken, fish or red meat. (5-6oz)
3) Workout: Personally, I want to get my workout out of the way, so I hit the weights 2.5 hours after breaking my fast.
a. Option 1 (this is mine): 1-cup of plain black coffee 2 hours after futoor, followed by 1-2 scoops of Whey protein 15-30 minutes after coffee consumption, then I’d hit the weights.
b. Option 2: 1-cup of plain black coffee or black tea 1-1.5 hours after futoor then you may opt to weight-lift.
c. Option 3: If you’re working out a lot later than 2.5 hours, then get in another meal 2.5 hours after futoor, which I will prescribe to you after we investigate how your daily regimen.
4) Intra-Workout: WATER, WATER AND MORE WATER! Shoot for at least 1.5 liters in a workout.
5) Post-Workout:
a. Option 1 (mine): 2 scoops of Whey protein
b. Option 2: 1-cup of Yireesh or Harees (with 2 tbsp of Cinnamon sugar) plus a moderate amount of lean chicken, fish or red meat.
c. Option 3: Scroll down and suggest your meal plan.
6) Dinner: 2.5-3 hours after the meal above. (1 hour if you consumed a protein shake)
a. Option 1 (mine): Moderate amount of lean chicken, red meat or fish plus a green salad or steamed veggies.
b. Option 2 (hardgainers): Repeat “Option 2″ in the post-workout bullet point above.
c. Option 3: Inquire with me.
7) Suhoor: This is the meal that’ll save your hard-earned muscle. Make sure it’s at least 2 hours after dinner and 30 minutes before you begin fasting.
a. Option 1 (mine): 1-2 scoops of Casein protein powder, 3 boiled eggs and 10g of Psyllium Husk.
b. Option 2: 1-2 cups of low-fat cottage cheese and 1-3 boiled eggs.
c. Option 3: 300g of lean red meat (filet mignon, tenderloin) plus a side order of green veggies.
d. Option 4: Ask this guy! [raises 2 thumbs and points to himself.]
8) Water Intake: Drink as much water as humanly POSSIBLE. Be sure to consume water 15 minutes prior and after any meal or snack. Consume 1 liter of water in between meals and snacks to ensure that you’ve fulfilled your H20 quota.
9) Don’t waste calories by performing cardio post-workout. You need those nutrients to hold on to muscle.
Goal #3: UBER-SUPER-DUPER FAT GAIN!
1) Do absolutely no cardio or any physical activity prior to breaking your fast. Sleep all day and watch those ridiculously dramatic TV shows.
2) Futoor:
a. Option Infinity: Consume every dish available to you until you go into a diabetic coma, causing you to rapidly crash and sleep for 1-2 hours.
3) Dessert – You’ve crashed and you need energy to pick you back up.
a. Option 1: 1-10 cups of coffee or tea with 1-10 tablespoons of sugar and half a cake.
b. Option 2: 1-20 cups of coffee or tea with 1-20 tablespoons of sugar and half a cake, 5-10 pieces of “sab el gafsha” and a small serving of Kanafa.
c. Option 3 (Optimal): 1-a billion cups of coffee or tea with 1-infinity tablespoons of sugar, an entire cake, 20-50 pieces of “sab el gafsha”, a large serving of Kanafa and your 30-50kg nephew or son.
d. Option 4: You’re still sleeping from devouring an entire dish of rice and Harees from Futoor.
4) Dinner:
Option 1: This meal’s pretty much a deal breaker since you’re most probably at a large gathering, serving every exotic and calorie-dense dish known to man. “I’m fasting tomorrow! So what the hey! Bring it on SON!”
Option 2: Hardee’s delivery. Here’s a fun fact: Hardee’s has more than doubled the amount of delivery men in a 3 year span. Coincidently, the rate of obesity in Kuwait has also more than doubled within 3 years. In conclusion, McDonald’s doesn’t deliver and KFC has pathetically the slowest delivery service. The blame must be on Hardee’s.
5) Suhoor: You’re in triple-diabetic coma from the dinner above and you’ve decided to sleep it off and skip Suhoor since, to you, that means “no Suhoor means less calorie intake! SWEET! Fat-loss without actually trying! I think these cool ripples on my stomach are my abs!”
6) 10 am the next morning: You’re 1 hour late to work, but you can’t completely grasp why you’re hungrier than a group of hippies after they’ve hot-boxed themselves smoking endless amounts of marijuana and receiving an awesome dose of the munchies. FML.

Personally, I wouldn’t wish the Uber Super Duper Fat Gain Diet on anyone. I do recommend options one and two, and I think your body (and Allah!) would too. Remember the goal of Ramadan is not to consume copious amounts of food as a reward for not eating from sunrise to sunset, but what the hell. If you want to do it, I won’t stop you.

So yeah.. I finally got to try the MUCH talked about burger in Le Cafe of Fauchon in 360 Mall

I ordered a pink lemonade -as suggested by our waiter- to go along with it
I liked their pink lemonade… so refreshing, specially in this weather

So both my friend and I order Le Beef Burger… I had mine cooked medium

And although I have specifically asked them not to cut it in half… it came this way

Taste? I expected it to be much better, not that it was bad or anything… as a matter of fact it was “kinda” good, but people kept raving about it so much, you know what I mean? Its just as Mark described it in his detailed review, hotel/room service quality
I would say… a five star hotel quality kinda burger
Yes its big, yes its juicy… but there was something off about the flavorings/spices used!! hmmmmm!!
Will I go again? Most probably yeah
The atmosphere and service are great… the food is good, and the dessert I had was SO GOOD!

I forgot the name, but I picked the one in the glass bowl… Its brownie topped with some yummy white thing and on top of which is cornflakes mixed with chocolate (high quality chocolate) and shreds of gold! I loved it
My friend had the eclaire and she loved it as well
Our bill total was around KD20 (two burgers, two drinks, and desserts)

Whadya think of this concept?

A chocolate fondue fountain with a wide range of cereals and fruit!
Every time I go to do my nails at Nail It I pass by this stand, its called Choco Nut

Most of those cups -if not all- are priced at KD0.500

And with chocolate its another KD0.500

Total price? KD1…. tastewise? I did not try it
So whadya think? They seem to be offering other services such as party catering

The owner of In Town Cafe invited me over to try one of their new creations, the Sushi Pizza! Right after work I dropped by to give it a try
He made me two pizzas, a regular round one, and a Chicago squares’ cut! The crust? Well hmmm its made of rice
Here is the Seafood Sushi Pizza

And the below is the Veggies Sushi Pizza

Interesting taste
I took a slice of the seafood one, but two squares of the veggies! Creative work, I like

Yesterday Little Diamond and I headed out to Fort Pickens, a long spit of land out on Pensacola Beach where there are old forts and batteries, campgrounds and hiking trails. The campgrounds looked heavily occupied, and there was a heavy surf – not to far from the road. In fact, although I am usually courageous, I felt uncomfortable about how close the surf was to the road. Out on this long, isolated spit, the land isn’t that much above sea level. It wouldn’t take much to wash right over the spit, and were that to happen, there is no place to run.
Personal security sort of becomes a way of life. It becomes second nature; you don’t even know you are constantly surveying your surroundings, looking for escape routes, keeping your back to the wall, facing the door, watching cars around you, etc. You don’t even know you are doing it, until you get that sort of choking sensation, knowing there is one way out and if that way is compromised, you might be sunk – in this case, literally.
On our way out and back, we saw mysterious activity, involving tents, lots of workers, surveyors and GPS systems. We speculated it might be movement of turtle eggs to avoid contamination from the oil spill, but we didn’t stop and ask – they seemed very intent and focused on their task.
We quickly toured and left for a nice lunch at Crabs – We Got ‘Em. DELICIOUS! We had the crab and spinach dip – oh Yummm. I had the crab cake sliders, which were so big I could only eat the crab cakes. Little Diamond had the Crab Ceasar. All in all, we were greatly pleased. Although yesterday was another hot hot hot and humid day, we ate outside in the shaded area, fanned by fans and Gulf breezes. Another day in Paradise.
(For those of you in the area, here is our review of our first visit to Crabs – We Got ‘Em several months ago.)
This morning, looking at the front page, we had confirmation of our fears – under the headline Bonnie Flies Over the Sea is a sub-headline “Ft. Pickens evacuates campers as storm enters Gulf, regains steam.”
A second article, above the line, is Sea Turtles Changing Shores and you can see a photo of a sea turtle nest full of eggs being moved to avoid damage from the oil spill.
Pensacola is actually just outside the projected path of Bonnie, but those storms are often known to veer from the projections. I have water and candles and matches and blankets, peanut butter and crackers stored in the closet of what Little Diamond calls the Fantasy Guest Suite. She is, as has become tradition, our first visitor.

Tonight I was invited to a tasting at the soon to open Fatburger. I hadn’t had a Fatburger before and I honestly only heard about it around a year ago after watching the great documentary Hamburger America. In the documentary they spoke about various popular burger places in America and Fatburger was one of them.
I had the double burger tonight and thought it was great. It was juicy and meaty and I loved that. The senior vice president of Fatburger was there and he turned out to be a great guy in an incredibly colorful and flashy Hawaiian shirt. I meet a lot of burger lovers all the time but I’ve never met anyone into burgers more than me until today. The guy is just incredibly passionate about burgers and he’s been having burgers a lot longer than I’ve been alive. He knows it all and he’s seen it all. I mean he used to have Fatburger back in the 50s when they first opened so he was really there from the start.
Just a few interesting details I picked up from him. Since they want the local experience to be exactly like the US experience they’re importing all their ingredients from the US. That includes the beef, fries and even ketchup. The Heinz ketchup that’s regionally produced is different from the US version. The color is bright red while in the US its a dark red but most importantly the regionally produced Heinz is sweeter. Since they prefer the flavor of the US Heinz ketchup they’re importing it directly to Kuwait. Imagine that, they could have gone with the local Heinz but they’re instead getting it imported from the US. To me that shows how much they care. You’re going to have the exact same burger experience as if you walked into a Fatburger in LA.
If you’re interested in trying out their burgers they’re opening next week in Fintas at Spoons. It’s easy to find since its on the main Fintas sea side road opposite Pizza Express. Good stuff.

I passed by Kei for dinner tonight and noticed they had a small fridge full of fruits imported from Japan. The grapes looked really good and I would have bought some if it wasn’t for the fact that they cost KD15 each! KD15 for grapes. KD15 for grapes. And one more time, KD15 for grapes!

Three days and two nights were over so soon. It was so much fun, but it was time to go back home to Kuwait

Oh don’t fall for this one below… its all acting
I promise hehehehe

While waiting at our gate, we sat back and relax… talked about the trip in general, got to know more about the students and what they do -which I am planning to post about sometime in the future- and had so much munchies to munch on… Baskin Robbins, Garrett Popcorn, McDonald’s… everyone was eating something… I decided that I wanted to wait till I get to Kuwait but Protege AlMunaikh gave me this bag

Its a Pappa Roti bun - Singaporean if I am not mistaken

Its so light and so yummy… coated with special spices -sweet ones- from the outside and fluffy buttered bread from the inside – Total delight
I love sweet and salt combo so much hehehehe! Thank you Protege AlMunaikh
And buhbye Dubai

The trip wrap up:

Last weekend i when with a friend to Kei Japanese restaurant at the Marena crescent (i just love Japanese food
) i met Ms. Ibi san the PR manager there and we had a very long chat about many things about her restaurant and the food, she told us about a visiting chef from Japan that is there until the end July and the new dishes he is teaching the staff over at Kei. She offered us to test some of the new items that will be included in the new menu that will be published after Ramadan.
There are three types of deserts that will be included as you can see in the pictures below.

We tested this one above, its made out of fruits, a biskit and wep-cream mixed with green tea. What i like about it is that’s it is healthy as it is for any Japanese food and its not too sweet, it feels just right.

Also, the visiting chef prepared for us his special “Yogama Yaki” it’s either Salmon or Hammor wrapped in seaweed topped with salt (this dish is on the menu now), the salt absorbers the water in the fish giving is a delicious taste. Now be careful not to have the fish touch the salt then it will be super salty. Below is a video of the Yogama Yaki, you will hear Ms. Ibi san voice explaining, I apologize if the quality is not good.

الساندويش التقليدي يباع بسعر 850 فلس

East meets west thing, I like it when people get creative presenting simple food to add something unique to their menu. Hope to see this in any of Kuwait breakfast places, amazingly no one has thought about it though The Early bird has something similar called sushi pancakes (selected fresh fruits wrapped in pancake served with maple dip on the side) served on weekend only, I think!
By the way, does anyone understand that Japanese writing? Hope it is about food

While in Dubai Mall, I dropped by Alison Nelsen’s Chocolaye Bar for dessert with a couple of my friends.

We just had light lunch at
Armani Cafe and spotted it on the upper floor of the mall when we decided to have dessert there

Very shabby chic feel to it
We browsed through the menu and picked out three desserts

We ordered red velvet cupcake, chocolate fondue, and spicy brownie with vanilla ice cream (can you guess my order?
)

The cupcake itself was too buttery from the inside and too sugary in the icing (which was dripping from one side), but it wasnt bad – Just okay!

Chocolate Fondue was impressively presented specially when I kept comparing it to Chocolate Bar – Kuwait… you know what I mean?

The spicy brownie wasnt really spicy in the beginning, I felt the spiciness after few bites in my throat… it was such a tingly nice feeling though
Overall, the atmosphere is very chic and it over looks some cafes down (Armani and Fauchon) with so much sunlight in. It was nice… but I somehow felt their menu is limited and that they can do much better with presentation

Meat Company

Few days back, the proteges visited Chef Adla AlSharhan’s Umami Culinary Consulting & School in Khaldiya.

They were divided into two teams; the Blue and Red teams! They started of with learning basic info about cooking, food, safety, and so

So each team must come up with a concept restaurant, work on a budget, create a menu, pick a location, do finances, and actually COOK food for a judging panel… Mentor Shamlan involved me in when I though I was there just to cover up the story… and boy oh boy, let me tell you this… THE STUDENTS WERE AMAZING!!! So lets see how it worked out… shall we?
Chef Adla AlSharhan was to mentor the student and help them in the overall cooking process, giving them suggestions and helping them out…
Here is Chef AlSharhan with the Blue Team

And the Red Team

and as for the planning part of the process, each team had back offices kinda thing working on the design, layout, menu, interiors…etc
So again, here is the Red Team working on their concept with Mentor Abdulaziz ALloghani

Who kept going back and forth between teams… cuz this picture is with him and Mentor Rana AlKhaled checking our the Blue Team work

And back to the kitchen… Chef Adla AlSharhan was full of positive energy spreading it all over the place

Now I have seen her on TV and YouTube and thought she was awesome… but I even liked her more in person! Very smiley and very active – You gotta love that chef

Protege Noura AlHajeri was the manager for Red team so she had to check in between now and then on their work
She rocks! Another very positive person in the premises

Chef AlSharhan was all about senses and feelings with cooking – something I can easily relate to with Ansam’s Kitchen
She would come up with different spices like this one here that contained some mango something in it!! She asked Protege Dalal AlSulaiti to try it out

Shamlan, on the other hand, was having a chit chat with Altaf and Monera of Blue Team… they were working on the dessert

Here is Dalal again… I think she liked the Chef’s suggestions and took them into consideration

Things in the kitchen were going crazy but not too out of control… it was the good kinda crazy… the fun kinda crazy to say the least.. I was having SO MUCH FUN

Hmmm… interesting!!

As you can tell from my pictures I kept switching between the kitchen and the other room were both team were working together. Back to the designing, finances, and layouts… I snapped few more pictures for you

Ms. Shaikha AlNafisi was helping out both teams with the planning process and giving them consultations on how to work on the budget

Mentors AlBahar and Burhama were talking with the students throughout the planning process… they seemed to be taking their project seriously!

I really am impressed with The Proteges! Such an awesome group that gives me big hope for the new generation!
Now back to the kitchen… the food is almost done and ready to be served

Well… Mariam AlOmani is still wrestling with her chicken hehehe – nevertheless she was AMAZING!

Joumana writing the recipe down – The mushroom risotto

Now how about that??????

So yeah… the moment of truth, the judges!!! Here is Mentors AlKhaled & AlBahar ready to eat and ready to grade

The Blue Team started… their concept restaurant was Italian, the dishes served were broad beans puree for appetizers, mushroom risotto for main course, and pastry drizzled with chocolate, honey, and powedered sugar for dessert! They were amazing!

Aside of their exquisite food and AMAZING risotto, their management team did amazing… considering all the questions we asked them… even when they were wrong, they prepared an answer for every thing…

I was impressed! They looked so confident and so ready to be slashed! Very well done Blue Team
Now with the Red Team… they immediately got high points for their ideas from minute one… They served complimentary lemon shot drinks along with a complimentary bread basket with this indescribable dipping sauce… something I have never ever tasted in any Indian restaurant! So yeah… they went with Indian food, creating lighter and healthier versions of Indian dishes

For appetizers, they served lentil soup, butter chicken with steamed rice for main course, and yogurt based dessert… all of which were fabulous!

Another added plus is their bowls of lemon-esque hand cleansing water! I loved the idea

The dessert was another story! It was vanilla flavored yogurt topped with mango/saffron flavored yogurt and garnished with pistachios! I was so full… I had a bite or two of everything, except for this dessert… I could not stop eating it till it was gone! WOW

Like the Blue Team, the Red Team management gave in their presentation to the panel

After both team were done… they sat waiting to hear the verdict

Based on some parameters, such as: creativity, presentation, taste, finances, interiors, and service, both team were given grades from the four judges… and the winning team was THE RED TEAM! WTG Red… but to be quite honest, they both did amazing! I loved their work, their spirit, their attitude, and amazing ideas…

Chef Adla AlSharhan will be giving cooking classes for the Red Team - Courtney of Umami Culinary School!
Thank you Chef for having us at your school, thank you Shaikha for your consultation, thank you mentors for inviting me to this amazing event, and the last but not least the fabulous students and Pink Coffee staff for always making me feel so at ease and so welcomed
I had so much fun

WTG Red… but to be quite honest, they both did amazing! I loved their work, their spirit, their attitude, and amazing ideas…

Chef Adla AlSharhan will be giving cooking classes for the Red Team - Courtney of Umami Culinary School!
Thank you Chef for having us at your school, thank you Shaikha for your consultation, thank you mentors for inviting me to this amazing event, and the last but not least the fabulous students and Pink Coffee staff for always making me feel so at ease and so welcomed
I had so much fun

Horrifying. I read the labels. I thought we could trust the labels. Thank God for independent testing. Bring on the Palestinian Olive oil!
Most ‘extra virgin’ olive oil bottles are actually cheaper mix
(See full article from WalletPop
More than two of every three bottles labeled imported extra virgin olive oil are either a cheaper grade of olive oil or adulterated with another type of oil, a University of California at Davis study found.
Top-selling brands including Bertolli, Filippo Berio, Carapelli, Pompeiian, Colavita, Mazola and Carapelli all had bottles that flunked the test — containing instead a cheaper virgin olive oil, the study by the university’s Olive Center found. Even a brand carrying the name of TV host Rachael Ray — who frequently touts her supposedly extra virgin olive oil — flunked the testing on two of three samples.
The chemical analysis did find that 90% of the California-packaged olive oils were indeed what they claimed to be. Two that were exactly what they claimed to be were Walmart’s Great Value brand and Costco’s Kirkland Organic.
“The intent of the study was to provide consumers and retailers with an accurate picture of the quality of olive oils now being marketed through grocery stores and other retail outlets in California,” Dan Flynn, executive director of the Olive Center, said in statement sent to Consumer Ally. “Our hope is that these findings will lead to improved methods for evaluating extra virgin olive oil, and increased consumer confidence that ‘extra virgin’ on the label means extra virgin in the bottle.”
Flynn said the United States is the world’s third-largest consumer of olive oil.
Consumer Ally contacted several of the largest manufacturers cited in the study, but only one immediately responded to the request to comment on the study. A Colavita official wanted to read the study before discussing.
A history of duping consumers believing they’re buying the rich-flavored and often pricey extra virgin olive oil led the federal government to enact more stringent olive oil standards, scheduled to take effect in October. In 2008, Connecticut became the first state to regulate olive oil after finding that some being sold included nut oils or soy oils, which could cause dangerous allergic reactions.
“Before this study, we had anecdotal reports of poor quality olive oil being sold as extra virgin,” Flynn said. “Now there is empirical proof.”
Some of the tests analyzed for problems that would affect flavor — the very essence of extra virgin olive oil. “Many of these oils just did not taste good,” Flynn said.
He cited the following reasons for the oil flunking the tests:
adulteration with cheaper refined olive oil
oxidation due to elevated temperature, light and or aging;
poor-quality oils made from damaged and overripe olives,
processing flaws or improper oil storage.

After a long eventful day at Emirates Mall and Afternoon Safari Trip the students were beat… but in the mood to celebrate still
After all… it was few hours before Mentor Shamlan AlBahar’s birthday!

So it was the usual, gather and lounge in the hotel lobby till everyone comes in… then take the bus to our destination; Souk Madinat Jumeirah!

We walked around the souk snapping pictures here and there and checking out different shops and making mini stops..

It was a nice evening… although a bit humid, but the atmosphere and surroundings + the awesome company made up for it all

Oh I snapped this picture specially for Chay AlTha7a

Anyways… we settled for Japengo Restaurant

The mentors, proteges, their familes, and volunteers quickly gathered around our one long table to eat

Now I usually wont allow many people to fiddle around with my camera, but Mentor Yarub Burhama seemed the professional guy to be handling it with extra care
And yes… I carried TWO cameras throughout the trip

Anyways… Mentor Shamlan AlBahar and Dana AlOtaibi were discussing the menu and dishes with Japengo staff to place order for our dinner

Everyone seemed to be having great time and enjoying the yummy food – I was too tired to even eat anything!! Can you believe that?
hahaha but I tried Japengo on previous visits and they have some yummy dishes – Loved their shrimp tempura
Anyways… it was time for Shamlan’s Birthday CELEBRATION!!! Wohoooo

Here is Mentor AlBahar with Nasser AlHumaidi and our awesome camera man, Sulaiman AlRifaie, checking out the footage

We left to go back to the hotel after this -kinda- relaxing dinner that was very much needed after a long day

Oh and it is worth mentioning that on the bus and at exactly midnight, the student had prepared a surprise for their Mentor Shamlan AlBahar! It was quite nice and very thoughtful

I got an email from a tipster (which was confirmed by another source of mine) telling me that Alshaya have acquired two new food chains to bring into Kuwait. The first chain is called Potbelly Sandwich Works which sells submarine sandwiches similar in style to Subway except supposedly better. The second chain is called Texas Roadhouse which specializes in steaks and has a western theme. I hadn’t heard of these two places until a few moments ago but I guess most of you will be glad the two chains are not burger joints. On the other hand I am still trying to find out some kind of information regarding the status of Shake Shack.
I was also told by another source that Pinkberry will not be opening in the Casamaroc location at Avenues like I had previously mentioned since the owner has refused to sell the place. But, they will still be opening a second branch of Pinkberry in that area.

You say your diet will start next Sunday. You have your last good buy free meal. You have your healthy diet breakfast and head to work/school/college… You come home hungry… and then you see those food pamphlets stuck to every corner of your news boxes at home!
Why do they always appear on the same day you start your diet? Can you blame us if the diet is ruined from day one?! I blame those wretched ads! I think they should be banned!
How many of your ‘Diet on Sunday’ plans were ruined by those ads?

When it’s time for Eid breakfast, or if we were having a light lunch or dinner… a lovely light choice would always be to pass by the nearest Co-Op branch and to grab a white plastic box of Nakhi, Bajela, Harees, or Ash…

My all time favorite is the Nakhi. I could eat a box of Nakhi on daily basis and that would be enough to last me a life time. I love mine with hot Iranian bread… sometimes i mash my Nakhi on the bread and make a mini wrap… or dip the bread into the Nakhi water… drinking the water is also said to be a cure for a severe cough… Do you love Nakhi? How do you eat it?

Bajela, i am not a fan of, at all… to me it’s a bit tasteless… so i would often dress it up with chopped up herbs and some lemon juice to give it flavor… i would still live without it happily… Do you like Bajela? How do you eat it?

Ash is my enemy to be frank. The smell! It makes my stomach goes in knots but every one else seems to like it… and for some reason it looked good in the picture fa there goes… Do you like Ash? How do you eat it?

Hares is my 2nd enemy… never ever eat it. I am not a fan at all… again people seem to like it so who am i to judge? Mo? Do you like Harees? How do you eat it? I see people sprinkling cinnamon sugar on top… do you do that?
What do you think? Do you like any of the above? None of the above? Have a special ritual of eating them? Please do share

After an eventful day in Sharja and Dubai, and after a good night sleep, we were ready for Day II! The plan was to meet down for breakfast, go to Emirates Mall, do the Freeze and shop around a bit, Go to Safari, and Celebrate Mentor Shamlan AlBahar’s birthday.
Mentors Yarub Burhama and Shamlan AlBahar heading for the buffet
Enjoying breakfast
As usual, we took the bus with the students in a good mood and with games played on the way there… down to Emirates Mall! Right then and there, they were discussing the Freeze

I had left them and met some family members in Dubai so I missed some of the activities on that day -The Safari for example- but I managed to snap some pictures of Du‘s HUGE booth with interactive games in celebration of the World Cup

I loved it
Whadya think?
