While in Dubai Mall, I went solo for the first couple of hours before lunch. I did some shopping and walked around snapping random pictures. As I was walking to the meeting point I decided to drop by Dean & Deluca Dubai since it was their opening day

I loved the ambiance there

Some managers from all over Dean & Deluca were there for the opening too

Gotta love this atmosphere of big glass windows overlooking the fountain and Burj Khalifah

And yes! That is Najib (of Dean & Deluca) reflection on the window!

As generous as always, they gave me a refreshing drink before I took of

After a long eventful day at Emirates Mall and Afternoon Safari Trip the students were beat… but in the mood to celebrate still
After all… it was few hours before Mentor Shamlan AlBahar’s birthday!

So it was the usual, gather and lounge in the hotel lobby till everyone comes in… then take the bus to our destination; Souk Madinat Jumeirah!

We walked around the souk snapping pictures here and there and checking out different shops and making mini stops..

It was a nice evening… although a bit humid, but the atmosphere and surroundings + the awesome company made up for it all

Oh I snapped this picture specially for Chay AlTha7a

Anyways… we settled for Japengo Restaurant

The mentors, proteges, their familes, and volunteers quickly gathered around our one long table to eat

Now I usually wont allow many people to fiddle around with my camera, but Mentor Yarub Burhama seemed the professional guy to be handling it with extra care
And yes… I carried TWO cameras throughout the trip

Anyways… Mentor Shamlan AlBahar and Dana AlOtaibi were discussing the menu and dishes with Japengo staff to place order for our dinner

Everyone seemed to be having great time and enjoying the yummy food – I was too tired to even eat anything!! Can you believe that?
hahaha but I tried Japengo on previous visits and they have some yummy dishes – Loved their shrimp tempura
Anyways… it was time for Shamlan’s Birthday CELEBRATION!!! Wohoooo

Here is Mentor AlBahar with Nasser AlHumaidi and our awesome camera man, Sulaiman AlRifaie, checking out the footage

We left to go back to the hotel after this -kinda- relaxing dinner that was very much needed after a long day

Oh and it is worth mentioning that on the bus and at exactly midnight, the student had prepared a surprise for their Mentor Shamlan AlBahar! It was quite nice and very thoughtful

So after freshening up, we took the bus and headed to Maraya in AlQasba in Sharja! On the way… students were -as usual- signing and playing games, so Mentor Abdulaziz AlAdwani took part in their activities – mainly music related

Everyone was starving so we made a mini stop at one of the fast food joints on our way

Shortly after we arrived to Maraya Art Center

Its a three-story art center for contemporary visual arts. At the entrance, mentors and students were fascinated by the first art piece they encountered. They were taking pictures and taking close look at the colorful blocks put together

Protege Dana AlGhanim admiring the art piece after everyone left… she stayed behind appreciating it a bit more
Then Maraya team gave a brief speech about the center explaining the design, purpose, lectures given, and offers in “The Shelter” – a medium used to connect with others and exchange ideas.

So on each floor, we would listen to a brief description given by them and then walk around and check the art pieces
Here is Fatma AlAwadi browsing a book she took out of the partition-like shelves
Mentor Yarub Burhama with Protege Dalal AlSulaiti discussing a photo
The upper floor is called Barjeel where collection exclusively exhibits pieces collected from Arab artists.

This was one of the pictures we were asked to explain… so what do you think?

The head piece, shmagh, represent the male presence, actually… the STRONG presence in her life. He is kind of ruling her, and she is seen (hence the frame) as the housewife in her ragged clothes and the cooking gloves shes wearing… not to mention the expressionless -yet sad- look on her face! No?
By the way… its a self portrait of the artist herself, I believe her name is Reem Lootah!
Nora AlHajri's head just got SO BIG!
Another interesting piece of art….

Here is Nora again… Gotta love this girl!
This is another piece I liked… Jesus shown -as still suffering- in a land where three languages is used

What do you think of this one now?

Now lets take a closer look at those red drops? Whadya think?

Students just being students and enjoying themselves
Danas (AlOtaibi & AlGhanim) checking out some of the pictures AlGhanim snapped throughout the day
Now I have no idea what is Sulaiman AlRifaie doing taking video recording this way… but Nasser AlHumaidi is taking his video the normal/regular way
More art pieces

Chillaxing outside Maraya before we headed back to the hotel for the next trip

So I am back from Dubai after covering The Proteges trip to Dubai as I announced before (link)! I will take you through it day by day in episodes, starting with this one – The take off Kuwait and arriving to Dubai and our hotel, Westin!
Initially.. Dana AlOtaibi, of Pink Coffee, did an amazing job with regards to booking tickets, hotel reservation, and announcing meeting time and point at Kuwait Airport. I remember handing her my documentations and travel expenses about a week or 10 days before the trip when I was invited… and she did the rest! Chapeau bas! Awesome work Dana
Anyways… we were supposed to meet at Kuwait Airport around 6:30AM on July 8th. The Proteges, mentors, some family members were all there ready to take off…

The place was full of positive energy and full of laughs! I was getting to know them more and more since I only attended few lectures throughout the course with them (here & here), but I felt I was part of the group so soon! They are, the mentors -whom I knew most of them- & the students were so friendly and very welcoming!

And it was finally time to take off via Fly Dubai.

We were handed out the boarding passes randomly, so I didnt know whom I was sitting next to, and so were the rest of the group who did not seem to mind at all. After take off, and after the seatbelt sign was off, I walked around trying to snap random pictures of the students, volunteers, mentors, their families… everyone doing a different thing! They even sang “Happy Birthday” to Mariam AlOmani who’s birthday was on the day!

Dherar reading on board... nice!

Students having a "pep talk" with mentor Abdullah AlEisa

Playing "Guessing Game" with mentor Rana AlKhaled
And here we are Dubai
Gathering point after baggage claim and short speech given by Mohammad AlMunaikh pulling an “Abdullah AlEisa” kinda spirit! Abdullah was laughing the most I guess!

Anyways… we took the bus to the hotel. We made a mini stop at a grocery store, but throughout the way.. The Proteges were singing many songs and played games to kill time… which was passing by fast
A sign of having a good time I guess!!

Mentor Shamlan AlBahar documenting the trip as well
and we got to our hotel at around 2:ooPM, in which we were given 30 minutes to freshen up and get ready for the first field trip to Sharja.

Protege Dana AlGhanim snapping random pictures at the hotel lobby

The National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters presented their 13th International Music Festival for this year. I have missed out on the first two days, Rashed AlKhodor and Turkish Music night, so I went on the third day for the Brazilian Concert where they played Latin Soothing Music. It was quite nice

I skipped on the 4th & 5th because because they were located in different places (Fahaheel & Mishref) – except for the Egyptian music night (which was in the same theater in Dasma) but I couldnt attend it either way.
Anyways, last night was their last night – The Spanish Music Show & Flamenco! So I planned the day with my friends
We gathered at our house an hour before the show to wait for everyone and for snacking before the show (and I sort of surprised them and didnt really tell them where we were going). Before we took off, I told them all about it to give them the free will to either come or leave
I was happy that they all decided to come. We were around 12
The event was great, and the girls reaction was a big hit. They were all grateful all about it which made the night a huge success
I am happy when my friends are happy
Anyways… I will leave you with few pictures and a video of the Spanish Show! Enjoy

My friend/coworker knows how much I LOVE the Baking Tray, so she came to my desk and asked me few questions on what cookies to get for a gathering she is going to in the afternoon. I went on and on about how yummy their chocolate chip cookie is and the dates and harda (tahini) too! I also told her they can custom made a giant cookie, but that will need a couple of days or so in advance order. Right after our chit-chat I attended a meeting. I came back to my desk to find this

Three boxes of cookies all from Baking Tray!! One with chocolate chip cookies, another with dates and harda, and the big one was GIANT CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE FOR ME <3

I’ve always ordered that cookie for my friends… I never got it! So this drew a BIG smile on my face that day! It was her belated birthday wishes to me since she wasn’t in the office on my birthday!

I asked her how she managed to order it on the same day? It need a couple of days or so -pre order-!!
She said that when she called them right after I went to my meeting, she asked them for the giant cookie and they told her it was kind of hard to do but asked the chef to speak to her… so she told him that she wanted the cake with “Happy Birthday Ansam” and he was like “ANSAM? She’s a customer and she comes to Baking Tray a lot… okay, I will do it”
So thank you Hessa SO SO MUCH xoxo! You have no idea how happy I was to get the giant cookie <3

Firstly, I would like to congratulate the boys at GulfRun for hosting such a fun and exciting event at the Bahrain International Circuit in January. A lot of great cars and a lot of action on all fronts, whether it was on the track, drifting or drag racing. GulfRun 5 was a success for the creators, sponsors and most of all, the drivers and visitors.
I thought it would be cool to give some insight to my readers on what it’s like to ride around the Bahrain circuit with a GulfRun driver. I was lucky to hop on board a Westfield track car with Ahmed Al Mudhaf, one of the founders of the event.

Ahmed is a quiet guy in general, calm and very easy to get along with, but boy is he a tyrant on the track. Our ride was unfortunately brief due to a shortage in fuel, but we managed 3 hot laps in total. Hope I give some justice to Ahmed on the level of skill and concentration needed for this sort of thing.

The pit lane
Ahmed and I head to the Westfield parked a little further ahead from where everyone was sitting. Far from the noise. It was beneficial because this way, he and I could calmly go through all the safety and procedural requirements before heading off; stuff like adjustment of the harness / safety belt, wearing my helmet, etc. Climbing into the Westfield was a bit of a nuisance for me, call it age or just plain being out-of-shape, I had to navigate the roll-cage (bars surrounding the cabin) carefully. As I look to my left, Ahmed smoothly jumps in with no problems (almost like the Dukes of Hazzard)… oh boy, this is going to be interesting.

Laps
As soon as we are cleared by the pit marshal and make our way onto the track, Ahmed makes sure that we are clear of oncoming traffic. He then pins the throttle and we’re off. The sequential shifter used in the Westfield provides a thunderous blow every time Ahmed up-shifts, accompanied by my head whipped forward with every gear change. We get to the first bend and this is where I quickly realize that practice sets drivers, like Ahmed, apart from others. He smoothly steers the car into the apex with just the right amount of throttle. A few more turns and then we reach the tricky hairpin corner of the track where many drivers lost control of their cars. At one point the car wanted to whip us into a spiral, but Ahmed managed to counter-steer it at the just the right time to save us from spinning out. Managing to exit the corner with the optimal amount of speed, he then guns it down the pit straight. The sound of the Westfield is wicked. Wickedly horrifying. Wickedly satisfying.

We then come to a left bend where the car was violently trying to lose traction in the rear. A few counter-steers at the wheel with brutal force and the car learns who’s the boss. A few turns later and we’re on the F1 straightaway. With the throttle pinned and approaching the hard-right turn quickly, I begin to think “he’s gonna brake now… uh… ok, now… now?” Suddenly, I’m thrusted forward in my seat with the safety belts holding me in place as he slams on the brakes and tosses the car into the corner. I forgot how late confident drivers brake on tracks. I need to get more practice under my belt!
Thanks for the ride Ahmed and looking forward to GulfRun 6!

I was invited to attend a course for table manners in Acanthe School of Etiquette & Protocol last week. Too bad I was not able to attend the whole course… so I went in for the last day and boy oh boy! Wish I had made the time for it! It was very interesting
I was greeted by the receptionist and a nice warm apple cider

The place was nicely decorated with shabby chic furniture… all in black and white

The class I attended was for about two hours… and with a break in between where you can go relax in their lounge area! Different canapes and yummiess (forgot to snap the before picture *sorry*)

I also snapped some pictures of the class rooms, the one we had the table manners class in was set on a dining table

For some reason (or maybe I deleted’em by mistake) I cant find the other pictures of the teacher’s office and the other classroom, so I got it from their website gallery

All in all, it was a very fun and informative experience. Not only I got few pointers and learned new things, but the class I was in was intellectual and the students with me were fun to be with and easy to talk to! Wish I attended the whole course!
Oh and they will also soon offer classes for the younger peeps
Thank you Acanthe! Thank you Hanadi and Rawan for this opportunity! I enjoyed it a lot!
Acanthe School is located in Maidan Hawally, Block 1, Gulf Road, Rasha Complex – 4th Floor and their tel number is +(965) 2565 – 3496. For more info visit their website, or join their facebook group

I woke up yesterday and though of this idea… I want to make simple dishes for dinner, ones that you look at and know what they’re made of, all in one theme… Kuwaiti Flag

So I went to Sultan Center with my sister to get the following:
1. Fresh Fruit (black berries, blue berries, strawberries, kiwi, guava)
2. Fresh veggies (tomatoes; both large and cherry, fresh thyme)
3. Lettuce
4. White onions
5. Sliced black olives
6. Labneh
7. Burgers
8. Spreads (black olives, red and green pesto)
And at home for dinner, we made the following dishes
Labneh, fresh thyme, cherry tomatoes, and sliced black olives

Burgers assembled with lettuce, tomatoes, and white onions… making up another Kuwaiti flag dish

My sister made pasta dish with three sauces; red, white, and green

Everybody loved that theme
It was a nice way to celebrate with food

Oh and that picture above is of a baguette bread sliced and accompanied with three spreads; black olives + red & green pesto

For dessert we had gers ogaily (Kuwaiti cake) -perfect with tea and milk- along with WOW’s Black Diamond cake for my friend’s belated birthday

And of course Kuwaiti flag fruit salad! I did not forget about dessert

Not to mention… the yummy chocolates I got from WOW too!

Any ideas/suggestions on more Kuwaiti flag dishes? I wanted to have black nachos along with sour cream, salsa, and guacamole… but I could not find black nachos in Sultan! So that an idea… if you find one

Few days ago, Mr. Fahad invited me for the soft opening of Let’s Burger on the 24th of Feb… I accepted with big smile of course!!! Don’t you know me by now? A couple of days later I saw P0ach’s Exclusive post about the restaurant and I got teased by all the “zexy” dishes – as he explained – and could not wait for the day to arrive
So yesterday… I finally got the chance to go with my sisters!

The restaurant is located on the third level in 360 Mall… right on top of Wagamama.

The reception area and the restaurant ambiance is very 1960-70s’ diner-like! Thats the waiting area

And their merchandise booth

The receptionist guided us through those retro walls and vintage posters on the wall… with TV screens! Very inviting

They are famous for their topping bar, where you make your own burger… your way!

Here are few more pictures of the restaurant and surrounding for you to get a feel of the place

This is their open bar area… adding to the decor with their smiley faces

We looked around for a place to sit to have our late lunch/early dinner…

Now let’s burger… shall we?

While their menu gives you a choice of wide variety and choices of burgers, they also have many appetizers, sandwiches, and desserts!

I was thinking… when in a burger restaurant, one must have a burger… or otherwise dont bother! But whats the harm in ordering a couple of appetizers before that along with two Shirley Temple and lemon n’ mint juice!?

So cheese nachos and bonless wings it is

The boneless wings were pieces of skinless chicken – unbreaded, which I think is a healthier choice than what we’re used to… no?

Both my sisters ordered the Mini Musketeers… three sliders with fries and coleslaw!

I, on the other hand, ordered the Swiss Mushroom burger… only thing that I did not like is that when I asked for it be cooked medium, they said they only do welldone, but assured me that it will be juicy and yummy… and it was! Though I still prefer to have that option

The burger was indeed juicy, but the cheese was melted… it was more of a sauce! Pay extra attention when you eat that burger, I wrapped mine in a napkin! I loved it!

The waiter brought as chilly cheddar sauce to try… it wasnt bad actually, but I prefer my fries the way they are… not even with ketchup!

We were stuffed… the staff, manager, and operation managers all kept coming to check on us… they refused, just refused that we leave without trying their desserts, specially the fondant. We asked them to share a couple but they brought us four to try! And of course… to be able to eat desserts at this stage, we were served coffee and tea LOL

This is their Mars Cheesecake… made with mars chocolate bar

Apple Crumble

Banana Crumble… the first time I try a banana crumble, and LOVED it! Its awesome.. too bad I could only take a bite only

But the best out of all was their fondant… we wanted to leave but one of the staff insisted that we wait (you need to order it ahead of time because it takes around 15 mins to prepare)! And let me tell you this… it was worth the wait! A vanilla ice cream with chunks of oreo cookies, chocolate fondant and banana sauce on the side! YUMMY

All in all… the place is awesome, service is superb, portions of food are generous, and the atmosphere is very appetizing! Their operation’s manager gave us a survey to fill out along with a bag of goodies
How cool is that?

Let’s Burger will officially open on the 27th of this month… do not miss it

“When in Paris, do as the Parisian do”
When we were in Angelina, we saw the gateau made for Galette des Rois (Click here for English). We just had to buy one and live the experience.
We got our gateau from one of the pastries stores in Paris

The one we got was made with almond paste, and it contains a trinklet. It is sold with a paper golden crown… the one who gets the piece of the gateau with the trinklet is declared the king/queen of the day and gets to wear the crown in the end.

Well… in our case, Farah won the crown, and of course she kept the trinklet!
