Omar Al-Khayaam musical by Loyac

Sunday, July 25th, 2010

Omar Al-Khayyam (عمر الخيام) musical play about the famous polymath, mathematician, philosopher, astronomer, physician, and poet.

I was invited by Loyac to attend the musical play at ASK in Hawalli and man i was in a treat. The music play has exceeded my expectation Big time!!

Just to tell you how good the performance was, i attended Broadway plays in Manhattan, NY  (The Phantom of the Opera, Lion King and Chicago) and Omar Al-Khayam by Loyac was Broadway material no doubt, no question.

The performance, acting, scenario, characters and music was just perfect. Today is the last day of the play if you like this kind of entertainment you will regret missing it.

Date: 25/7/2010 final day (i wish they extend)

Time: 7pm to 9pm

Location: ASK Hawalli Al-Mothana St.

Language: Arabic

We really need more of these plays to remind us of our great Islamic hiragana, culture and history that i’m extremely proud of *Standing Ovation* for Loyac team.

Old Spice Man Goes Viral

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

Today on NPR I listened to a lengthy interview with Ismail Mustafa, the new Old Spice Man, and actor in what has been called the most successful advertising campaign, EVER.

My friends, this is totally hilarious. Old Spice is so old that my father wore it. It is so old that is has been way past unsexy, and this campaign boldly reversed everything.

Not only is it getting hit after hit on YouTube, Old Spice is now flying off the shelf. This is a total hoot!

Coming Soon: Indoor Go-Kart @ 360 Mall

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

The guys at freez in 360 Mall told me that the new indoor amusement park, Infunity, was scheduled for opening last week. So, I stopped by to check it out this evening. Infunity is located in 3rd floor; it will be easier to find if you use the escalator next to TGI Friday’s.

The place is nice and empty and  has new things to do away from Kuwait’s burning hot weather such as roller coaster (in service), climbing wall (in service), cool play ground for kids (in service), Go-Kart drifting track (coming soon), and more. I did not take pictures of the whole place except the Go-kart which I like the most.

The only drawback of the Go-Kart is the track, it’s small and tight for the number of karts they have in there. It will be interesting to see how people will race in it. Infunity working hours are 3pm – 11pm everyday

True Blood Season Three

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

First, if you have never watched True Blood, go to the library and check out Season 1 and Season 2, or buy them, or download them – whatever it takes, watch every episode so you will get where this show is coming from (grammatical: from where this show is coming).

We don’t watch this show to learn about Louisiana. We watch this show because the writers are truly gifted, and sometimes in the midst of yet another totally over-the-top situation, there is a line tossed off that is hysterically funny.

As the vampires discussed ethics last night, the Queen of the Vampires said “isn’t moral anarchy kind of the point?”

LLOOOLLL! When we first met the vampires in Season 1, they were mostly a nasty bunch, no morals, living in viperous “nests” and preying on humans. Little by little we have begun to know a few as ‘people’ and discovered they are not all bad. Vampire Queen reminds us that long-lived vampires live by a different code, and that the problems arise when mingling with humankind.

Don’t expect any of this to make sense. Just grab that speeding train, get aboard and hang on for a wild ride. -)

As they warn – nudity, sexual content, adult language – none of this is for children. This is definitely grown-ups only.

Warning: As raucous and raunchy as True Blood gets, it has a thick underlying morality. It may not be my morality or yours, but it is exploring some interesting and pertinent issues.

Some Hidden Information contained in Famous Logos

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

Amazon.com

This logo doesn’t seem to hide much at first sight, but it gives you a little insight in the philosophy behind the brand. First of all, the yellow swoosh looks like a smile: Amazon.com want to have the best customer satisfaction. The swoosh also connects the letters a and z, meaning that this store has everything from a to z.
Fedex

This is probably one of the best known logos with a hidden meaning. If you look closely, you’ll see an arrow that’s formed by the letters E and x. This arrow symbolizes speed and precision, two major selling points of this company.
Continental

Continental is a manufacturer of tyres. You could actually see this in their logo, because the first two letters create a 3-dimensional tyre.
Toblerone

Toblerone is a chocolate-company from Bern, Switzerland. Bern is sometimes called ‘The City Of Bears’. They have incorporated this idea in the Toblerone logo, because if you look closely, you’ll see the silhouette of a bear.
Baskin Robins

The old logo of Baskin Robbins had the number 31 with an arc above it. The new logo took this idea to the next level. The pink parts of the BR still form the number 31, a reference to the 31 flavours.
Sony Vaio

Sony Vaio is a well known brand of laptops. But did you know that the name Vaio logo also had a hidden meaning? Well, the first two letters represent the basic analogue signal. The last two letters look like a 1 and 0, representing the digital signal.
Carrefour

Carrefour is one of the biggest European retailers, and it’s also French for “crossroads”. The logo symbolizes this word via two opposite arrows. They also added the first letter of the name, because if you look closely you’ll see the letter C in the negative space between the two arrows.
Unilever

Unilever is one of the biggest producers of food, beverages, cleaning agents and personal care products. They produce a huge amount of different products and they wanted to reflect this in their logo. Each part of the logo has a meaning. For example: the heart represents love, care and health -  feeling good, a bird is a symbol of freedom. Relief from daily chores – getting more out of life.

Formula 1

At first, this logo might not make much sense. But if you look closely, you’ll see the number 1 in the negative space between the F and the red stripes. I also love how this logo communicates a feeling of speed.
Sun Microsystems

The Sun logo is one of the most famous ambigrams in the world. You can read the brand name in every direction; both horizontally and vertically. This logo was designed by professor Vaughan Pratt of the Stanford University.
NBC

The NBC (National Broadcasting Company) is one of the biggest American television networks. I think most of you have already seen the peacock in this logo. The peacock has 6 different tail feathers, referring to the six divisions at the time that this logo was created. The peacock’s head is  flipped to the right to suggest it was looking forward, not back.

Get Him to the Greek

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

AdventureMan and I saw the most hilarious movie, Get Him to the Greek.

I don’t think this movie will ever show in Kuwait or in Qatar. It contains violence, drugs, alcohol abuse, nudity, gross sexual content – it could be incredibly offensive. Somehow, it manages to be totally hilarious, reminiscent of the old classic This is Spinal Tap It also manages to have some serious moments, and a hint of redemption.

A lovable but nerdy employee at a record company is assigned to fly to London, meet and accompany an aging rock star to a come-back concert in Los Angeles. There are multiple opportunities for disaster and unpredictable moments. No one can tell you how sad and funny and pathetic and disgusting and . . . well, mostly funny – this movie is going to be. Even the music the rock star sings is hilarious and totally made up for this movie.

Trust me, this is not a family movie. It is, as our son said, raunchy. You do not want to be with teens or adult children. It would be squirmingly uncomfortable. We found it hilarious.

The singer, who took to the stage with Madonna and Britney Spears for a notorious performance at the 2003 VMAs, used her ‘Not Myself Tonight’ clip to salute the pop queen’s legacy.
‘One of my favourite videos ever is ‘Express Yourself’ by Madonna which came across as really strong and empowering which I always try to incorporate through my expression of sexuality,’ Aguilera said.
‘I love the direct reference I made to Madonna with the eye glass moment and the smoke and stairs. I was paying tribute to a very strong woman who has paved the way before.’

Quake 2 on HTML5

Saturday, April 3rd, 2010

Unbelievable huh? If you know me very well you’ll know how much I hate April Fool, and this video was released the same day. But so was Gmail! I hope Gmail isn’t a long time joke as well cause I’ve been swearing my life on it for years. So anyways, this is the official Google Code page for the project. There are people saying it’s April Fool, and even TechCrunch was confused about it. But if you look at the Wiki and people’s comments, you will see people really trying and building it. No single comment from someone who tried it telling it’s a fool. So it seems pretty real, an for the sake of the future of the web, I really hope it remains real. This could be a serious threat message to Flash.

That’s a career best for both the director and star Leonardo DiCaprio, neither of whom had scored a sizable hit since their last outing together on “The Departed,” which opened to $26.9 million in 2006.

    Shutter Island – Movie Review

    Monday, February 22nd, 2010

Being Sunday morning i was able to sleep in, i woke up and flipped thru my iphone and was face to face with Flixster. I decided to check out which were the nearest movie theaters with any decent movies, and stumbled upon Shutter Island. Flixster gave it a 70% but i decided to try it out nevertheless. I used to hate Leonardo Dicaprio, but after such movies as The Aviator,  Catch me if You Can, Blood Diamond, Body of Lies and The Departed more recently, he has become one of the actors i am enjoying most in movies. So we went off to the movie theater but decided to eat as we were an hour early for the movie. We went to a Brazilian grill restaraunt which was right by the cinema, and it was awful. Its called Tucano’s grill, and it seemed like the meat was from actual Tucan’s, the bird that is. Anyway back to the movie.

The movie is around 2hrs and 18mins. The only way i can describe it is delusional, hallucinating and utterly genius. It drags you on for almost 2 hours thinking that you know whats going on, when the last 10 minutes it changes totally. Its not like a Sixth Sense kind of ending, but you have the feeling all the way through that something is not right, but its totally different than what you imagine. Of course there will be parts of the movie where you might think it is slow and too easy to guess, but only the ending does justice to the movie. Basically it is about a US marshall (Dicaprio), who is investigating an escaped murderess from a remote island (Shutter Island) which is a hospital for the criminally insane. Martin Scorsese again does not fail to amaze with this plot and ending. IMDB gave it an 8.5, and for their standards that is pretty high. Great movie, with lots of twists and turns and worth the watch.

The Best Way To Watch Kuwaiti TV Shows And Plays Online

I loved the idea of having a vast collection of Kuwaiti TV shows on YouTube, but hated the 10 minute limit on videos that forced me through endless clicks just to watch a single episode. And sometime the quality is horrible.

No more, I just added a new page that will contain external links to full length episodes with the hope of adding more content with time.

First up, what might be the best Kuwaiti TV show ever. Darb Alzalag (درب الزلق)

  • Avatar Novel By Director James Cameron

    Thursday, February 18th, 2010

Avatar producer, Jon Landau told MTV that director James Cameron is going to write an avatar prequel. The prequel won’t necessarily be transformed into a movie, but rather be a full fledged novel that’ll go into each character’s history in depth. In a way, James Cameron is trying to lay a foundation for the movie. Or maybe a foundation for sequels to come?

    Jon Landau interview:

“Jim is going to write a novel himself, not a novelization – and there is a distinction. A novelization basically retells the story of the movie. Jim wants to write a novel that is a big, epic story that fills in a lot of things. [We] won’t have time to do [these stories] in the movie, or maybe in sequels, so the novel will give a foundation for the world. It would be something that would lead up to telling the story of the movie, but it would go into much more depth about all the stories that we didn’t have time to deal with – like the schoolhouse and Sigourney [Weaver’s character] teaching at the schoolhouse; Jake on Earth and his backstory and how he came here; [the death of] Tommy, Jake’s brother; and Colonel Quaritch, how he ended up there and all that.  I don’t think Jim has ever written a novel before, but his first step of writing a script is often in a novella format, so this is just expanding that, and I think that he’ll be very adept at it.”

    P.S. I haven’t seen the movie yet.

Lady Gaga devastated by McQueen’s death!

    Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

According to Lady Gaga, pop’s most outrageous star will put in an understated and earnest performance at tonight’s Brit Awards, as a tribute to her late friend, designer Alexander McQueen, who committed suicide last week.

Gaga was to have put on a wild and witty show at the 30th anniversary Brit Awards event. But the death of the man who had designed some of her most over-the-top fashions has devastated her, according to sources.

Originally Gaga was to arrive onstage in a wreck of a car, packed with musical instruments, to perform a medley of her biggest hits, including “Poker Face.”

Now, she is planning on singing her less well-known songs, “Telephone” and “Dance in The Dark.”

    Review: Orbit Showtime Network

    Sunday, February 14th, 2010

Alright you guys, I told you about this baby being installed in my room and stuff, let me just say, that I might be OUTDATED to many of you who have the service, but to those who dont, trust me, this is the REAL DEAL !

To begin with, I paid exactly 83 KD 500 fils for the following:

    - Show box reciever, a semi TIVO receiver with nearly 160 GB of hard disk memory, I LOOOOOVE IT !

    - Installation.

    - Two months of “Premiere Plus” subscription.

    - They brought a brand new satellite, installed it up, they even did the necessary cable drilling through my window. The guys were professionals and knew exactlly what they were doing.

    Powerful Remote Control:
See this ? this remote is insanely powerful. Its insane, for real, i mean, im addicted to it, I cant let it go out of my hands, at all. why ?

well first of all, I get to record my favorite shows by just going through the TV guide that updates itself by the hour, I simply choose the program I want, I ask it to record the damn thing for me, and BAAAM, I have the whole thing waiting for me at home.

Maybe you dont understand, I can pause, stop, fastforward lousy commercials, repeat a scene, its CRAZY !! going through the TV guide’s timing is not an issue no more, NOW, I decide when to watch what I want, when I want and HOW i want, I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE IT ! AAAAAAAH !!! wait hold on, I need to do my dance, ok 1, 2, 3, GO !

    Shows on demand:
And then you get even more spoiled by going through a free special 40 hours session called OSN on demand, which is basically a handful of TV shows, movies, documentarires that are downloaded into your hard drive and are literally waiting for you to watch’em, on demand, for free !

Now im watching The Tudors, Season 3, its HAWT, historical but has lottsa of baby making scenes, nasty, *snap*

    Reminder:
I love the reminder service, suppose your watching a show but THINK that there is a more important show for you to watch, simply go to the tv guide, choose what you like and click on the reminder button and it will give you two options. The first is to simply remind you that your show has started, the second, my favorite, cuts off whatever it is your watching and takes you directly to your favorite show. AHHHHH !! the good life !

    Pay Per View:
Whenever you feel bored, hardly, you can go to the pay per view set of blockboster movies with insane clarity and really well up-to-date set of movies. Nearly 1 KD.

    Movies, Music, TV Shows:
They have the MONIQUE SHOW !! AHHHHHHHHHHHHH !! and BET !! need I say more ? I mean yall know im ghetto/black/afro american deep in my heart for some reason and those guys are serving me right.
Seriously though, the set of TV shows, music channels and movies is just beyond what you could ask for. Plus, there are many more shows that make me smile all day long like:
    -Ellen.
    -Trace.
    -OSN variety.
-Good morning America & Good morning America “Health”.
    -BET
    -E!
    -Downsize me.
-Sports channels to grab my bigger and younger brother to my room, HAH!

    SUPER clean/clear:
The images, sound, clarity and the whole viewing experience is insanely clear. For instance, I saw grey’s anatomy on TV before, but here, its like people are about to pop out of the screen, its unreal !

    Independent internet:
Probably my favorite part of this whole experience is that the SHOW BOX gets the internet independandtely from the satellite, so this will not in any shape or form affect the internet connection speed in your house at all.

Ofcourse the shows that are “ON DEMAND” for you are downloaded into the BIG hard disk on your show box with insane speed, I didnt even know these shows were downloaded to begin with, LOVE LOVE LOVE the speed, effiencay and quality of what I have, its one of the best things I did to my room/myself ever.

    Wolf Moon Over Doha

    Saturday, January 30th, 2010

Like a PEARL in the newly opened exhibit, the Wolf Moon illuminates the Museum of Islamic Art

From AOL News, where you can read the rest of the article)

(Jan. 29) – Tonight’s full moon will be the biggest and brightest full moon of the year. It offers anyone with clear skies an opportunity to identify easy-to-see features on the moon.

This being the first full moon of 2010, it is also known as the wolf moon, a moniker dating back to Native American culture and the notion that hungry wolves howled at the full moon on cold winter nights. Each month brings another full moon name.

But why will this moon be bigger than others? Here’s how the moon works:

The moon is, on average, 238,855 miles from Earth. The moon’s orbit around Earth – which causes it to go through all its phases once every 29.5 days – is not a perfect circle, but rather an ellipse. One side of the orbit is 31,070 miles closer than the other.

So in each orbit, the moon reaches this closest point to us, called perigee. Once or twice a year, perigee coincides with a full moon, as it will tonight, making the moon bigger and brighter than any other full moons during the year.

Tonight it will be about 14 percent wider and 30 percent brighter than lesser full moons of the year, according to Spaceweather.com.

As a bonus, Mars will be just to the left of the moon tonight. Look for the reddish, starlike object.

The weather is perfect. Go out tonight and enjoy this fabulous, bright moon.

Brisk Morning at the Souq Al Waqif

    Friday, January 29th, 2010

“My husband hates shopping and hates the souks” said one of my friends, and my friend Grammy and I just grinned – any excuse for a trip to the souks, especially to introduce someone to our own particular joys. Early breakfast at the Beirut, walking here and there, finding small treasures and great pleasures, and ending up with coffee at the Cafe Tasse, which has divine Cafe Mocha with real whipped cream. It’s OK, I don’t have real whipped cream every day, just . . . have a problem resisting on those wonderful sunny winter mornings in the souks.

Some sights to share with you:

Dashing souk policemen on horseback, an early morning treat

The hardware souk, in the ‘guy’s souk area’, i.e. camping, hunting, fishing, falcons, hardware . . .

alworud.com – Soccer and more for women

    Thursday, January 21st, 2010

    Name: Alworud.com

    Site: http://www.alworud.com

    Type: Sport / Soccer

Brief: For the first time I think, girls have a decent indoor place to practice soccer and other kind of sports. For 30 KD an hour, no more than men usually pay, girls can get their own indoor artificial grass field, and on the side can set and enjoy the cafeteria, and hey, Wi-Fi. How come we don’t have that? Interested people can even book the whole place for one day for, umm, 240 KD. But that’s good for large gatherings and special occasions I guess.

They also have a website for online booking called Inspor, although I have to say, the mix of the two sites is a bit confusing.

At all rates, I think it’s a great thing to have, and hope the girls can enjoy it (without invading our territory please!)

There is nothing more boring than sitting in a gas station, waiting for your tank to fill, unless, of course, there is an SUV with a sun roof, full of adorable, raucous little boys with puppets. We were laughing our heads off.

Some of the photos are blurry because it’s night, and the puppets would not stay still – they were swirling and doing battle with one another. Every now and then the boys would come up and take a bow. LLOOOOOLLLLL!

Little boys are so much fun!
