Half a million Dinars

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

Spotted this billboard on the Sheraton round-about which cracked me up since “Sweet!” wouldn’t be the normal reaction to winning half a million Dinars… not unless you already had a few million to begin with. So I took the liberty of suggesting some better alternatives. The one above is the current ad that’s plastered on the billboard while the ones below are the ones I am recommending. If anyone has other alternatives post them below!

Some Hidden Information contained in Famous Logos

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

Amazon.com

This logo doesn’t seem to hide much at first sight, but it gives you a little insight in the philosophy behind the brand. First of all, the yellow swoosh looks like a smile: Amazon.com want to have the best customer satisfaction. The swoosh also connects the letters a and z, meaning that this store has everything from a to z.
Fedex

This is probably one of the best known logos with a hidden meaning. If you look closely, you’ll see an arrow that’s formed by the letters E and x. This arrow symbolizes speed and precision, two major selling points of this company.
Continental

Continental is a manufacturer of tyres. You could actually see this in their logo, because the first two letters create a 3-dimensional tyre.
Toblerone

Toblerone is a chocolate-company from Bern, Switzerland. Bern is sometimes called ‘The City Of Bears’. They have incorporated this idea in the Toblerone logo, because if you look closely, you’ll see the silhouette of a bear.
Baskin Robins

The old logo of Baskin Robbins had the number 31 with an arc above it. The new logo took this idea to the next level. The pink parts of the BR still form the number 31, a reference to the 31 flavours.
Sony Vaio

Sony Vaio is a well known brand of laptops. But did you know that the name Vaio logo also had a hidden meaning? Well, the first two letters represent the basic analogue signal. The last two letters look like a 1 and 0, representing the digital signal.
Carrefour

Carrefour is one of the biggest European retailers, and it’s also French for “crossroads”. The logo symbolizes this word via two opposite arrows. They also added the first letter of the name, because if you look closely you’ll see the letter C in the negative space between the two arrows.
Unilever

Unilever is one of the biggest producers of food, beverages, cleaning agents and personal care products. They produce a huge amount of different products and they wanted to reflect this in their logo. Each part of the logo has a meaning. For example: the heart represents love, care and health -  feeling good, a bird is a symbol of freedom. Relief from daily chores – getting more out of life.

Formula 1

At first, this logo might not make much sense. But if you look closely, you’ll see the number 1 in the negative space between the F and the red stripes. I also love how this logo communicates a feeling of speed.
Sun Microsystems

The Sun logo is one of the most famous ambigrams in the world. You can read the brand name in every direction; both horizontally and vertically. This logo was designed by professor Vaughan Pratt of the Stanford University.
NBC

The NBC (National Broadcasting Company) is one of the biggest American television networks. I think most of you have already seen the peacock in this logo. The peacock has 6 different tail feathers, referring to the six divisions at the time that this logo was created. The peacock’s head is  flipped to the right to suggest it was looking forward, not back.

Flashmob: R we ready yet?

[Watch on YouTube]

R we ready for this type of advertising technique? Lately, using teasers as ways of marketing and advertising has become very popular in Kuwait. Teasers are nice and good methods to grab attention and create curiosity.  Most of teasers based campaigns were simple and straight forward.

What’s Flash mobs? It is significant number of people show up in a specific place to perform some actions for agreed time then leave the place as if nothing has happened.

Flash mobs are used for different causes; they could be used for marketing, protesting, appreciation, tribute, support, highlights, improvement … etc

Many big names and brandssuach as T-Mobile, Coca Cola have used this method for advertising. If it’s done correctly, it should have better effect than traditional methods.

In August 2008, Dubai attempted to organize world largest flash mob freeze of 1,000 people in Mall of the Emirate ended with failure after only 4 people showed up. So yes, it needs commitment since it takes place in real life environment not in studios.

Locally, we were told that Zain used flash mob for their Find Fahad game in the avenues where mob members were dressed in black T-shirt roaming around together.

Here’s list for some flash mobs activities

Pregnant women breakdancing in London

Purpose: Highlight that breakdacing is safe comparing to women giving birth in poor countries without a midwife, hospital or medicine. To raise awareness that women around the world are not getting the healthcare the need for pregnancy.

GLEE – Il (FOX TV)

Purpose: TV series Glee season 2 promotions

Coca Cola

Purpose: Band and marketing

$10,000 RISK FREE money, just give me your bank account details

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

We’ve all gotten emails from people offering us money either because their uncle who owns a diamond mine passed away or maybe they inherited the money from their father who was king of Samboliadoodoo before he got killed in a coup d’état. Well what if one of these emails turned out to be true? Mother, an ad agency in London sent out an email to hundreds of people telling them they would give them $10,000 risk free money and all they had to do was reply back with their full name and bank account details. Well one guy did reply, and guess what happened? Watch the video. [YouTube]

Unique Wataniya service

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

wataniya

I got this information from Frankom. Wataniya Telecom has a new and unique service. You can change your mobile number then people will know that you did by calling your old number a recording will tell them your new number and you will receive a text message informing you about the numbers that called your old line.

That’s a nice service but what if I changed my number because there is someone I don’t want to call me :s “you can run but you can’t hide” will if that’s the case just change your number without adding this service. BTW this service works even if your old number was Zain or Viva.

Wataniya is stepping there game up since it’s their 10th anniversary

Mariah Carey’s new album will be a magazine

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

amc

Wow, the recession’s in full force right now that even the biggest of artists are feeling it. Mariah Carey’s next album Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel will be a different release than what we usually expect from the diva. It is going to come with a CD booklet-sized Elle magazine that comes with the first million pressings in the US and first half million pressings worldwide. Yes, it’s going to include the magazine with advertisements and an intimate interview with MC. It’s no longer product placement when it comes to album or videos, it’s full-on advertising. So far, Angel Champagne and the Bahamas Board Of Tourism bought some of the space and L.A. Reid is looking for more by announcing this.

The booklet will be inside the CD case. The package will also include another CD with 2 videos and some remixes. I’m not sure that Mariah should be the first artist to go along with this experiment especially that she has to tread carefully with this album as “Obsessed” has lost its airplay time. Also, I am worried about how the critics will handle this. But, in any case, critics have never been nice to MC and it didn’t stop her from being the best selling female artist of all time.

Next up, rolling credits on music videos. Oh, wait, we have that here.

Family Guy In The House!

Saturday, April 4th, 2009
We were browsing at Virgin Store's boutique section when I saw theseAdorable!

It's Stewie!!! The youngest child on Family Guy cartoon series. That show is not your run on the mill cartoons because... well.. because you wouldn't want your children to watch it. Heck, you won't even want your Grandmother to watch it as they will certainly get offended.

I discovered Family Guy when I was holed up in our apartment in Davao. I can only do so much malling, eating out and going to the beach before my wallet gives up thus staying in and watching tv. I can't stand Wowowee so I went through my brother's dvd's and found Family Guy season 1.

The rest, as they say, is history. From 20 something episodes of season one up to season 7, my brothers and I bonded through this tv series.

By the way, Davao has the best pirated dvd's unlike here in Kuwait where they try to sell you 6 dvds for 1 KD just for one season. In Davao they have the whole 22 episodes or so of 1 season in just 1 dvd and all for 500 fils. Great deal right?
When I got back here in Kuwait I thought it would be awhile before I get to watch the show again but boy was I wrong. Showtime is showing it like 5 times a week! I schedule it for recording and watch it whenever I get the chance.

Anyway, back to the shirt, it's too expensive for 9 KD. I looked it up and found that it only costs 7 $ online. It's too pretty to pass on though but I just can't! Maybe i'll get that keychain that's only 3 KD when I get back there.

Amft. Corporate America.

I love their theme song!

It seems today that all you see
Is violence in movies and sex on TV
But where are those good old-fashioned values
On which we use to rely?

Lucky there's a Family Guy
Lucky there's a man who, positively can do
All the things that make us laugh and cry
He's our Family Guy!

Gelaskins in Kuwait?

Friday, April 3rd, 2009
Eversince I scratch my very first laptop, I've been drooling on Gelaskins protective skins for laptop's, Iphones etc. I read all about it from Chuvaness blog and I haven't stopped wanting them since.

Aren't they cute? *sending good vibes to the world for the up and coming birthday - me wants this world!*

I even tried ordering from Sultan's ask and they ship center but the shipping charge was just, if I remember correctly, more than the orginal price of the product. Too much.

It seems that the world felt the good vibes and sent the answer through facebook! You know those ads on the right side of your screen? Well I just saw this one .

Dear Customer ,
This is our “soft opening” for the website
where you can see our upcoming products and can order our special KOUT design
for 13” laptops and other international skins, and hopefully you will join us in
the official opening by the end of April.
Thank you for your support,
Omar
Alothman & Fahad alEbrahim
I browsed through their site and I saw some of the exact same designs from Gelaskins. For 10 KD a piece plus 1.5 KD charge, if delivered by ARAMEX, I might just get myself a birthday gift.

That is of course, if I can get that laptop I so covet in Al Ghanim.

I Want More BAYO!!!!

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008
The BlisterSister and I (that's me below, promise. Hahaha) wants to wish everyone a
BlisterSister said that the photo and wish above is all she can give to the people in Kuwait that's fresh from the Philippines.

I, on the other hand, got KC Concepcion's BAYO product. Yipeeee.

"Bayo," an ilonggo term which means, "dress" in English was chosen by
the owners of the company since they are from Bacolod.
Bayo reflects a clean, classic image. Bayo caters to women who embody the laid-back, casual lifestyle who have preference for stylish yet classic apparel.
Bayo is a testament of what the Filipino can do in today's competitive environment. Bayo is proud of what it has achieved as a Filipino retailer and it expresses its full pride in being Filipino. This is what set the brand apart, its devotion to staying true to its roots as a Filipino brand. It has no pretensions on what the brand image is all about and rather keeps in tune with the brand's origin, which is still Filipino. Bayo revolves around who the Filipina truly is in all her
different facets and how she evolves with time but still maintaining her distinct cultural attributes.

Bayo's strength lies in its ability and skill to create classic and stylish apparel and keeping in tune with what its market demands. Its focus is centered on its products, making them of good quality at very affordable prices.
Bayo offers classic pieces of ready-to-wear apparel from blouses, tees, pants, jeans, skirts, accessories such as footwear, bags, jewelry and other merchandise, which can be easily be mixed and matched. Bayo aims to create a lifestyle for women by providing them with diverse range of products.
Bayo's corporate structure has a very casual environment as well as a friendly

When I first bought a fabulous office attire that I paired with BAYO bag, I wasn't hooked yet but the sizes, casual style, the comfortable cuts and the price makes it a perfect candidate for a second round of shopping spree.
What got me hooked are these:

Shirts that screams, I am proud of being a Filipina. I feel like a walking billboard for the beautiful Philippines. I horded half a dozen of those styles when I was there last Christmas and I asked family and friends who goes on vacation to get me something from BAYO as pasalubong when they get back.

Aylavet.

Have a good night Kuwait. Let's pray for the dust to settle tomorrow and of course world peace.

Jade is one of my bestest friends since 2nd year high school and Janet since college - these two are Industrial Engineers who worked in one of the biggest signage makers in the UAE. Upon their success, they were able to sponsor and bring in 15 more of their classmates to work in different engineering companies in UAE all in the span of less than a year. They are my success story.

For my birthday, they decided to visit me here in Kuwait for a weekend and them being here beats all the birthday bashes I had the past 4 years.

Since they are Engineers, visa did not pose a problem because of the GCC resident visa upon arrival clause. I picked them up at midnight drove them straight at my Aunt's house where we fed them Sirloin steaks and Potato salads. Then I took them home where they had me unwrap my gifts from Pers Lab and them and a whole night of "chikahan" ensued after that.

The next day I took them to Aqua Park where unfortunately photos aren't allowed so I can't show you how brave I was to take this crazy ass slide.

Oh okay. Don't tell the big man that yells at everyone inside who got a camera phone that we took snapshots.

Below is my friend Jade trembling at the idea of going down the kiddie slide. She actually inteviewed the life guard about the accident statistics and after 10 minutes up there she went down - by the stairs.

No I did not play in the water slides because just like my friend Jade, I am a scaredy cat like dut. See I tried it couple of years ago when my sister was here and I did not develop a taste for it thank you very much :D

Aerial view of Aqua Park taken from Kuwait revolving towers.

After swimming we were supposed to either try the Go Kart or the Paint ball but since they will only be here for a couple of days what is the best way to see Kuwait is by climbing 100 something floors up of Kuwait towers to have a 360 degrees view of Kuwait City.

It's also educational as well as cultural due to the various photos scattered around the tower during the gulf war.

Sweeping view of Kuwait Gulf.

We were deadbeat afterwards that when we attempted to walk towards Mishref International Fair from my house for a Go Kart run we apparently got lost and arrived in a place where genuine imitation designer bags are for sale. Yey!

It was an absolutely fun great day.
