The Ultimate Water Review Part 2

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

When I posted my water review I wasn’t expecting much interest. I just did it because I thought it would be something fun but the response was much more than I was expecting. A lot of you requested I add more details like the sodium content or where the water comes from so I went ahead and did that. I just finished a long and very cold session in front of my fridge tasting all the water and taking down notes. Since the last review I went and purchased some more water brands and I think I managed to get one bottle from everything available in the market except for the bakala waters (random unknown brands you won’t see anywhere else).

For each bottle of water I’ve now written what kind of water it is, where it’s from, the sodium content and the taste. Water to me should have no taste but some brands (like the bakala ones) have a strange flavor for some odd reason. So when you read “none” keep in mind that’s a good thing.

Finally before I share the results, most of these brands of water can be found at your regular super markets except for the following:

10 Thousand BC and Icelandic Glacial are only available at Dean & Deluca.
Fiji I’ve seen only at Dean & Deluca and sometimes at Sultan Center.
TSC, O2GO and Metro Mint only available only at Sultan Center.
Isbre isn’t available anywhere yet but will be released in the Kuwaiti market this March.

The review did reveal some surprises. The biggest for me was TSC. Turned out to be bottled in Lebanon and contains only 2.3mg of sodium. I think TSC could actually be re-branded Rim water since both are bottled in Lebanon and both contain the exact same amount of Sodium. But that’s just my theory. Between locally produced water the two I would choose over other brands are Arwa and AlRwadatain. From the more expensive brands Highland Spring seems to be the best deal and also contains just 6mg of sodium. Check out the results below.

31 : A hell of a day!

Sunday, January 31st, 2010
I had a hell of a day at work,  had paper work to do then there was this new database that I had to test for validity for final usage and the whole thing was messy, I do not like to work with incompetent people nor those who ignore the end user comments. Will put up a good fight, as much as I can so at least we would work on a descent system.

New Life’s Resolutions!

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

As many can agree, 2009 was a pretty crap year for most people.  For me, 2009 was a year of upside down change.  Not that I’m regretting it now, but the way the change happened wasn’t too comforting for anyone who’s not a fan of quick and non reversable change.  I as well as most of my friends are happy to have stepped into a new year.  Being that I am 31 this year, I am stepping into a new decade as well.

To be quite honest with you, I haven’t been warming up to the idea of 30 +.  The main reason for this is because I am seeing alot of change in my face and body over night.   Not only do I have one or two wrinkles now, but all the sudden I have alot when I smile.  My skin isn’t naturally toned on its own anymore and I can hardly breath if I walk up more than 10 steps.  Granted, I can blame probably all of that on my 15 year smoking habit or the fact that I’ve been careless to elder’s advice of taking care of myself in my 20’s because I truly thought I was different than everyone else )

Anyway all that said,  I have made resolutions for a life change and not just a Year change because I figure if all those true life stories of change as well as miracle celebrity change can happen, I can suck it up and make some change for myself!  So here they are, once and for all… I will create a new folder called Transformation to document any progress posts I make and to post any resources that might help others attempting some of the same resolutions.

Resolutions:

1.  No more Smoking EVER AGAIN

2.  Moisturize – morning with regular Clarins moisturizer.  Night with olive oil

3.  Join a gym – cardio 40 min 3 times a week.  Strength – 3 times a week  (can’t do this till Mid Feb)  :  Somehow I managed to lose alot of weight in 2009 so my body is the shape I want it, but I really want to tone and be healthy.

4.  Take my vitamins – (multivitamin)

5.  Eat healthy – LIMITED JUNK FOOD (once a week).  LIMITED WHITE STARCH. EAT VEGGIES & FRUITS.

6.  Get another job.  Enough bumming!  It’s been 7 months and I think I’m done with my break.  It was well needed to clear my head and figure out where I want to be and what I want to do.  I will give myself 3 months to find a decent job otherwise I will start my own venture.

Well that’s what I can think of for now.  Will keep you updated on the progress of my Resolutions.  I will NOT fall off the wagon anymore because I can’t afford to if I want to remain looking similar to what I do now when I’m 40 )

Review: The iJacket

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Over the weekend I picked up an iJacket while I was shopping in Bahrain. I originally posted about it back in 2007 and then totally forgot about it until I saw it at the store.

Firstly just to be clear, I got the jacket because the jacket looks good. I was not interested in the iPod connectivity, thats just an extra benefit for me but not the reason I bought the jacket. I am not the type of person that walks around listening to music and so I won’t be using the controls on the jacket a lot. Now since I did get the jacket and I do own a number of iPods I figured I might as well give my feedback.

The iPod has a special transparent and water proof pocket on the inside of the jacket. There is a regular iPod connector in that pocket and you connect your ipod to it. The pocket also has a small opening for your headphone cable to pass through. The controls on the jacket sleeve are fairly basic, volume up and down, pause/play forward and reverse. The idea is that when its cold outside you don’t want to unzip your jacket and pull out your iPod every time you want to perform a simple command and that’s where the controls on your sleeve come to play. Without unzipping your jacket or removing your gloves you can control your iPod by just touching the buttons on the sleeve. Although I call them buttons they’re not really buttons. The part of the sleeve where the buttons are located feels exactly the same as any other part of the sleeve. No bulge or anything of that sort just the shapes of the buttons imprinted on the sleeve.

When I first tried using the controls I thought I had a malfunctioning jacket since the buttons didn’t work. Then I found out that the jacket auto-locks the controls after 8 seconds of no use and to unlock the controls you have to hold down on the unlock button for 5 seconds. That’s the biggest issue I have with the jacket… the auto-lock feature. It makes the jacket unpractical. Imagine you’re listening to music and then a friend wants to tell you something. To pause the iPod you need to hold down on the unlock button for 5 seconds and then hit the pause button. So it takes at least 6 seconds to pause the iPod which is silly. You know how sometimes one track plays a lot louder than others? Well you need to wait 5 seconds for the buttons to unlock before you could quickly lower the volume to a decent listening level.

That’s why I’m giving the jacket a 2 out of 5. The auto-lock feature is the dumbest idea ever. There is no reason to have it since I can’t imagine the buttons being pressed accidentally unless someone grabs you from your arm and how often does that happen? I’ve already emailed Zegna asking if there is a way to disable the auto-lock but I doubt there is. As a jacket the iJacket is very comfortable and great looking. As an iPod controller it sucks big time because the auto-lock makes it impossible to use. Now a cool feature I would use a lot if it was included would be iPod/iPhone charging. I know there are a few jackets out there that do that but currently the iJacket doesn’t which sucks. I’m hoping if there will ever be an iJacket 2.0 it will.

Kindle battery problem caught in action

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Remember that Kindle battery problem I mentioned earlier? It’s been paparazzied.

Kindle out of Battery Fail

Clearly, the Kindle still has about 25% of it’s battery, and it’s complaining about low battery, after which it went almost empty immediately.

After TWO years!

Sunday, January 31st, 2010
I guess I should have waited till March 2010 in order to really say it's been 2 years. But since I just felt like writing a post now, I will.
It's funny that so much has changed but my blog just kinda stayed there, exactly the same! It's a little bit weird.
I'm actually in Beirut right now. Just for 2 days. My husband is here on Business, so since I am not working at the moment, I'm indulging in traveling with him, when I can.
So yes, 2 years ago I was still single. Today I've been married for one year and four months. 2 years ago I was still working, today I'm not. I guess you always look back and feel like you miss your old days. I miss being in High School. I miss living in Montreal. I miss being in University. I miss the feeling of getting my first pay check. I miss living with my parents. I miss being engaged. I miss planning my wedding. I miss driving my car to Kuwait City in traffic every morning.
So it looks like you go threw life remembering and missing the past.
But is that really such a bad thing to miss something. Does it mean you want them back. Look at me now. I am happily Married. Excited about starting a Huge Huge Family, hopefully! Love feeling I can come and go with my Husband when he has to leave Kuwait for work. If you told me you can go back and relive everything you were missing in your life over and over again. Would anyone do that.
I don't mind missing a lot of things I lived.
At least I'll always be remembering nice things. Since you always miss the best things you had in life.
This means Up till now I've had a pretty good life. If I was to really list you all the things I miss. Then I can tell you I had a great life.
I'm actually looking forward for all the new things that will happen in my life so that I will be missing them one day!

Que Sera, Sera… whatever will be will be

Sunday, January 31st, 2010
I had a problem a while back with one of my very closest friends, The Romanian. She said that I had said something bad about her, but she never told me what it was and she never wanted to have a sit-down discussion about it which would have either 1) clarified it so that we could continue to be friends or 2) clarified it so that we could move on in different directions, but with an understanding

People’s Expiration Dates: My Theory

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

People Expire:

1) Physically- Not necessarily with old age; but when they are no longer physically attractive (only applicatory to those who were physically attractive to begin with)- a deformity seems to surface with every glimpse no matter how hard you try to overlook it. Those people are usually self-conscious and try very hard to compensate through various means.

2) Mentally- Again, not necessarily with old age; but when they are no longer in control of themselves especially with their behaviors. Their decisions are frequently erroneous which later leads to regret and anguish. Those people can be aggressive and may resort to violence or complete denial.

3) Emotionally- Those who are detached and dry- not necessarily intentionally. Dryness in young people is seen as stubbornness or as a problem as opposed to natural dryness occurring with age for older people. Those people are usually in a lot of “silent pain” and are terrible in handling rejections.

The exact dates in which people expire are unknown.

I just know… I cannot cope with those who expire emotionally.

Signs of losing it!

atheism

I am no atheist, agnostic wala any other term they come up when it comes to my relationship with Allah but I am having my dark moments and although I was telling a friend enno shit like this is probably better off left inside rather than displaying “my dirty laundry” = literal translation of the Arabic phrase: أنشر غسيلي الوسخ to the mass public but here I go in hopes of me closing this chapter on this sick feeling for ever!

I was in the kitchen on Friday, bent down on my knees wiping the kitchen floor after doing the dishes and my mom’s catastrophic cooking ;p and it hit: “What good am I getting out of this life?!” !? this was followed by: “Wow, if this is what I deserve here and now, what would I see ba3deen – in my after life?!” <– since I am not working that much on that aspect honestly speaking.. I do pray, fast, donate, feel for others and believe but am just not “into it” ! yeah like the book! <– notice how opened minded I am on this matter eh!

Nowadays I only think of how unjust life is towards me (my family as well and I don’t want to go into details because it’s just pathetic) I KNOW WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT and don’t dare tell me it’s a test from Allah for those who have great faith it just doesn’t make sense! I have my dues I admit but mental wise, I think I am too fragile, weak, zeft to go through this without snapping and ohhhh yes, I have snapped quite badly, may I add. Damaged beyond fixing, my new tag line!

Leish ya Allah is this happening? (and no I am still engaged so shut up, it’s not about it although I feel it’s effecting us)

Leish ya Allah do you do this to us? (from the dad to the youngest sibling, there’s a serious issue) although my father prays like a gazillion times a day and he’s a sincere Muslim mesh one of those with fake le7yas and shit!

Leish ya Allah do you bring it out on me when I am the one who seriously helps and acts like a “sponge” when required!

Allah, are you taking away some of my sins before you take me soon!?

Allah, are those sinners- not just any sinners man! Those who publicly fuck around, drink and FUCK AROUND better than me?! Why do you give them more, comfort them more?!

Allah, what should I do?

*Addresses the devil= “No, I won’t kill myself or one of my family members!”*

Cookie Dough Cupcakes… The Recipe!

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

I was looking for ways to decorate cupcakes when i saw several recipes for a cookie dough cupcake… i liked the concept and wondered how it would tastes? So i came up with my own combo using a new vanilla cupcake recipe incorporated with ready made cookie dough … the result?! AMAZING CUPCAKES!!!!

You can make those yourself in ONE hour… the ingredients are available in your cupboard… and your house will smell like a little heavenly bakery D

I made two types: Cookie Dough Cupcakes and Oreo Cupcakes… both from the same cupcake batch…

Before you start, take your milk, eggs, and butter out of the fridge and keep them for about an hour in your kitchen so they will be in room temperature -they must be- and right before you start, pre heat your over to 170 C and then start mixing your ingredients…

What do you need?

For the cupcake: Flour, Milk, Vanillla, Eggs, Baking Powder, Butter, Cookie Dough, Oreos, and Sugar

Good ingrediets are EVERYTHING: you must use good vanilla like Foster Clarks, none of that powder vanilla things or your cupcakes will smell like eggs!

This is the cookie dough i used… available in Sultan Center

You need cupcake paper cups, i used small and large ones... black and silver

Line your cupcake baking trays... available in two sizes from IKEA

This recipe makes about 12 Big cupcakes and 12 small cupcakes

200 g of All Purpose flour sifted with 3 teaspoons of Baking Powder, or you can use 200 g Self Raising Flour, keep aside for now
Measure 175g of White Sugar
Add the sugar to your mixing bowl

Measure 175g Butter, thats 1 and 3/4 Sticks, it must be really soft and at room temperature

Add the butter to the sugar

Start beating the butter and sugar together

Meanwhile break your 3 eggs, one at a time, in a seperate bowl

When your sugar butter mixture looks like this, stop the beating

Add your egg and start beating again. When it's well mixed, add the 2nd egg, mix, add your third egg and mix

When your mix starts to look like this... its time to add the flour so stop beating

Don't add all the flour at once. Add a litte at a time, mix until well incorporated, then add more until you are done

You need 60 ml milk (4 tblspoons) and add a dash of vanilla to it (i add until i can smell the vanilla) and then add it to your mixture and mix

When your mix looks sandy and grainy... you know you are done! Don't over mix it... stop the machie at once

You will need a little spoon or ladel to scoop your mix... a tiny ice cream scooper will do as well

Scoop a little cupcake mixture

Insert into your cupcake cups

This is more than enough... don't fill it to the brim it should be 3/4 full only

For the cookie dough cupcake, open the thawed cookie doughs and cut each in half

with the tip of your knife, add a half cookie dough into your mix and push it in

It should look like this...

With the remaining mix add a couple of oreos to the cupcake mixture

Start beating the oreos with the mix... the machine will break them to little pieces

When your done mixing, stop and scoop into your cupcake cups... then send your trays to the oven

After about 18-20 minutes for the large one and 15-18 minutes for the small ones... they are done! Check yours with a toothpink before taking them out... and be patient as they take a bit to cook... unfortunately i overcooked mine a bit but they turned out fine

While your cupcakes cook, prepare the icing... for the icing: you need about 160 g of icing... u can also use 200g to make more icing

Add 75g soft butter to your mixing bowl

Put a sieve on top of your mixing bowl

Add the sugar, and start shaking so the sugar you use is lump free

You can swirl it around if its too lumpy like mine

When you are done sieving the icing sugar, start beating on low speed

When your sugar and butter are well mixed, add 2-3 tablespoons of milk and vanilla mix... and mix until you get that consistency

Now the frosting is done, you can add the colors you like to it and have a blast! The best ones yet are the Mccormic ones i found in TSC Al-ahmadi!

Take a little frosting in a small bowl and add the color of your choice. I tried to use a piping bag but it went terribly wrong and messy fa i discarded it

For my oreo cupcakes i wanted pink frosting... so i added a tiiiny drop of red food coloring

Start mixing well... if the color is too light add another drop and mix well

Now the color is right ...

When your cupcakes are VERY COOL add a smudge of frosting on top and starts smoothing around with a normal knife

Done with the frosting

I made chocolate frosting for my Cookie Dough Cupcakes... just add 60g bitter cocoa powder to your frosting mix and mix well

Add the sprinkles of your choice

They smell good...

They are tiny and cute

In decorating them the sky is your limit! Put whatever you feel like top of them...

Bite into the Cookie Dough Cupcake and you will find a little cookie surprise inside! ITS AMAZING!

My mom loved them so much, she actually ate a whole one her self !!! Which is saying a lot considering she splits tiny chocolate pieces in half before eating them! She also decided to pack them up and take them to a gathering of women we were invited to D

Chicken Katsu Curry: Wagamama

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

While at 360 Mall, we decided to try wagamama. A friend recommended that I try the chicken katsu curry over there.

The restaurant was almost empty, only few people scattered over the two dining venues, I did not know the restaurant was that big! Service and stuff were slow and I did not notice happy spirit except that “thank you” phrases when we left the place … odd I’m not sure if the mall is not helping them or they need more time training.

The food … I like Japanese curry dishes so I loved my chicken katsu dish, yet I may order it from kids menu next time to have the right portion for me.

Getting My Closet Ready for Summer

Sunday, January 31st, 2010
There is absolutely every reason for me to start buying summery shoes (correction, already started). They’re colorful, they’re comfortable (hello flat sandals and gladiators), and they’re cost effective. Just imagine home many times you’re going to wear your summery shoes throughout the year here in Kuwait.  So to continue my shopping spree, I passed by the recently opened Shoebox NY branch at the Avenues Phase II. They have started receiving spring goods from Brands such as Dolce Vita, Giuseppe Zanotti, and Cynthia Vincent in beautiful bright and neutral colors. Also they’re still carrying boots and flat thigh highs from Loeffler Randall.

Are you sprucing up your closets for Summer? What's on your fashion wish list?

Abraham bargains with God

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

When I hear people say God never changes his mind, I think of this story. From today’s reading in the Lectionary, Abraham, Father of the Jews, the Christians and the Moslems, bargains with God not to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah:

Genesis 18:16-33

16 Then the men set out from there, and they looked towards Sodom; and Abraham went with them to set them on their way. 17The Lord said, ‘Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do, 18seeing that Abraham shall become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?* 19No, for I have chosen* him, that he may charge his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing righteousness and justice; so that the Lord may bring about for Abraham what he has promised him.’ 20Then the Lord said, ‘How great is the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah and how very grave their sin! 21I must go down and see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry that has come to me; and if not, I will know.’

22 So the men turned from there, and went towards Sodom, while Abraham remained standing before the Lord.* 23Then Abraham came near and said, ‘Will you indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked? 24Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city; will you then sweep away the place and not forgive it for the fifty righteous who are in it? 25Far be it from you to do such a thing, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous fare as the wicked! Far be that from you! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do what is just?’ 26And the Lord said, ‘If I find at Sodom fifty righteous in the city, I will forgive the whole place for their sake.’ 27Abraham answered, ‘Let me take it upon myself to speak to the Lord, I who am but dust and ashes. 28Suppose five of the fifty righteous are lacking? Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five?’ And he said, ‘I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there.’ 29Again he spoke to him, ‘Suppose forty are found there.’ He answered, ‘For the sake of forty I will not do it.’ 30Then he said, ‘Oh do not let the Lord be angry if I speak. Suppose thirty are found there.’ He answered, ‘I will not do it, if I find thirty there.’ 31He said, ‘Let me take it upon myself to speak to the Lord. Suppose twenty are found there.’ He answered, ‘For the sake of twenty I will not destroy it.’ 32Then he said, ‘Oh do not let the Lord be angry if I speak just once more. Suppose ten are found there.’ He answered, ‘For the sake of ten I will not destroy it.’ 33And the Lord went his way, when he had finished speaking to Abraham; and Abraham returned to his place.

5 Posts a Week = Success

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

I would like to consider this my 5th post for the week as the final one and the one that marks my success on such a mission.  It’s awesome seeing this happen since I tried to enforce myself to at least post a few lines everyday just to stick to my promise.  2009 marked the year where I let go of blogging faithfully and 2010 will mark my return.  I am still looking towards changing some key elements in my design since it’s been a year since I’ve done any changes and I am sure there are lots of things broken here and there in this theme.

This weekend was something really it sucked and was okay at times.  I am still hating it but who knows February is just around the corner and I can’t wait for it to arrive it’ll truly mean something!

February will be MY month! I will make sure of it!

Countdown until surprising news = 2 weeks or so :)

Fantasy World

Saturday, January 30th, 2010
I went to the Avenues today and we took my nephew to fantasy world that has just recently opened, and i loved it its like we came in the store for me not for my 2 year old nephew i love those kind of toys and mind games.
I bought two kind of puzzles one is 500 piece puzzle which is the minimum number of puzzle i could find there and one is the smallest 1000 piece puzzle , even though i dont have the patience to do it all i have my sister (11 yrs older then me) she loves those stuff i would let her do it with me, i even told her so and she said "those small puzzle how am i supposed to see it???" i told her kaifch looool!!!
And i bought this Clue do game a detective game i used to play it  in old times and i LOVED it!!
(Dont mind my toe LOOL)
And there was a cooking corner which i fell in love with immediately, i bought a "kitchen princess" apron which i needed because every time i cook/bake i become soo dirty afterwords IF you know what i mean and i cook/bake very often and i also bought a cupcake shape timer for the same purpose. I also bought ice moldings which i wont use for ice but i will use for chocolate molding " an idea that i have in my mind". I also saw those costume princess things that i loved and so sorry that i dont have my size LOOL.

( The molding you see of the cat and star that i bought and the right hand apron)
And my sisters ( which are 16, 13, 12) bought a large coloring book and a lollipop and a popsicle maker.
And i saw a lot of great games but what could a person do All that was around 43 KD.
And here is me starting on the puzzle.
And thats all i really liked it.

P.S:
i finished Death Note and i totally fell in love with it and i was/am very sad that Light had died i really liked him.

Euro Parliament Members, Sign in, Check Out

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

Check out the video above (taken in 2008 by RTL); It features a European Parliament member whose monthly salary is 14,000 Euros (KD 5,580) sign in for work then dash out with their luggage.

Even moralistic Green Party MEP Hiltrud Breyer, one of the founding members of its party signs in, dashes, out banging her head on the elevator entrance. Maybe she was going to save a beached whale somewhere or harass a super tanker with an inflatable dinghy.

I always thought not coming to work, or signing in and dashing out was a Kuwaiti tradition perfected by Kuwaiti Government employees. Whenever you venture to a Kuwait Government establishment, you rarely see any Kuwaitis, only the Indian tea boy, the Bangladeshi cleaning boy, and the Egyptian clerk.

It seems even Europeans are not immune to laziness and cheating on the job.

Mombasa’s Old City

Saturday, January 30th, 2010
I have mentioned in a previous post that the special charm of Mombasa’s old city can hardly be perceived immediately. My Jordanian colleagues from Kuwait and I had booked at the Whitesands Sarova Hotel north of the city. The view of the Indian Ocean just outside the hotel with camels on the beach was breathtaking. The constant breeze from the ocean made humidity and tropical temperatures very comfortable. In fact a place to die, I was thinking.

My friends are not the ideal company when exploring exotic places. On my request, we went to Mombasa, but it was hot and dusty and I was told “we know all of this” from home. When I became curious about the 16th century Mandhry mosque with its strange minaret, I was informed by my Muslim friends that it was not prayer time, so asking to enter was hopeless. Nobody was either interested in the vegetable and fruit market. Was that a bazaar? We rushed through the lanes. Souvenir shops sold beautiful collectibles at reasonable prices.

Qatar’s ‘Manly Women’

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

Thank you, Little Diamond, who sent this article from The Economist as an update to blog entry on cross dressing based on a tiny article in the Gulf Times

CROSS-DRESSING is on the rise among young Qataris. The local press says that more tradition-minded locals are upset by the growing number of young women affecting a masculine style of dress, baggy trousers, short hair and deep voices. These women, who call themselves boyat, which translates as both tomboy and transsexual (and is derived from the English word boy), are being seen in schools and on university campuses where some are said to harass their straiter-laced sisters.

In an episode of a talk show on Qatari television, called Lakom al Karar (The Decision is Yours), a leading academic said that the “manly women” phenomenon was part of a “foreign trend” brought into Qatar and the Gulf by globalisation. Foreign teachers, the internet and satellite television have been blamed. So have foreign housemaids, for badly influencing children in their care.

The studio audience was divided over how to respond. Some called for the death penalty for cross-dressers, while others favoured medical treatment. A rehabilitation centre for Qatari boyat has been set up, but a local report says that as many as 70% of them refuse to give up their “abnormal behaviour”.

It is not just Qataris who are rattled. A year ago the ministry of social affairs in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) launched a campaign against “masculine women”. The project, entitled “Excuse me, I’m a girl”, involved workshops, lectures and television programmes, stressing the virtues of femininity and raising awareness of the presumed dangers of women looking like men. An emirates’ foundation is helping to fund a research project on “gender identity disorder among Emirati youth”.

One official describes the “deviant behaviour” of the boyat as a “menace” to society. But others sound less fazed. An American university lecturer in the region says the short hair and gym shoes worn by these young women would look perfectly normal on an American campus. That is just what unnerves the traditionalists.

Why do you think these girls dress and act like men? Why would a girl do that?

I think girls do that – in any country – for a reason. If privileges and freedoms are heavily weighted in favor of males, perhaps there is no great mystery as to why some females would prefer to be males. It makes sense to me. Girls aren’t stupid. They can see who is getting all the goodies. My guess it is less a gender issue than a values issue.

On the other hand, when – and if – things are more equal, there is less motivation to be other than what we were created to be.

I had some young local friends who told me that they were taking Tai Kwan Do, but quit when a neighbor told their mother that it might threaten their virginity. It broke my heart. The martial arts give grace and confidence to young women. There are a lot of ways a hymen can be broken; I have never heard of it happening while training in Tai Kwan Do. These young, vibrant girls have fewer and fewer activities that they are encouraged to do, and end up staying home or strolling endlessly at the local malls. Aaarrgh!

Dads – teach your daughters to hunt! Teach them to fish! Teach them to swim, to throw a softball, to kick a football. Take them camping in the desert, and let them run freely. Teach them chess, and how to win. Give them the gift of physical and intellectual activity, give them the understanding that sports, employment and power are equally accessible for all sexes, and you won’t be having problems with girls who yearn for the freedoms and privileges of being male.

Taken by a MUSE

Saturday, January 30th, 2010
Today I was taken by a surprise by the early arrival of AlOthman's seasonal lookbook MUSE. And what a nice surprise it was. A refreshing turquoise cover color, beautiful artistically designed pages, mind blowing pieces to reserve, some new designers, whom I luv, to look forward to like Rabih Kayrouz and Roksanda Ilincic, and trends pages to carefully study. And I dedicate the last photo of this post to the blogerette/bride-to-be who left me a comment few days ago and who's on the quest to find her dream wedding dress. Good luck.
