My father enrolled us into an American school seventeen years ago. I was supposed to go straight to third grade because of my age (8 years old), but due to the lack of English I spoke, I was put in second grade. I remember more events from that year in my life than others, for some reason, so vividly that sometimes, it feels parallel to the ‘Now’. If that makes sense. Some memories are of my first day at school. I remember having super short hair and wearing a polo shirt and a pair of shorts. I slid into a desk in the front of the room and seconds later, a little girl joined me on the same seat (it could easily fit two). The teacher told her that each student had their own seat and we weren’t sitting in pairs. I later learned that the little girl’s name was Jimmy. We became friends later but unfortunately, she left school but still, her aunt remained a TA.

I also remember wanting to cry but not crying because it would be too embarrassing and I could not live with the label. It was too traumatizing, I felt. However, being early in the morning I felt nauseated, yet not as much as a classmate. Her name was Amar. She threw up. The teacher walked out with her while Amar held her own vomit in the palm of her hand. It was dripping. It was yellow and white. In case you wanted an image (I’m gross, I know).

The teacher is the one who introduced me to English and because I loved my teacher, I earnestly listened to her and learned as much as I could. She was very patient woman who was knowledgeable beyond belief which helped us learn, love what we learn and love learning itself. Unfortunately, the teacher left and said she was not coming back again. That was the worst news ever. Since I am immensely grateful (always have been), I never forgot my teacher’s name and I always hoped I’d get back in touch with her. There never comes a year that I don’t think about her several times and hope I will soon reconnect with her. Yesterday, it happened. It was a great day/night (time difference).

I tell you bloggers, I haven’t stopped smiling! She’s one of the best people ever. She really really is.
