Tuesday, September 30th, 2008yeah bo
Tuesday, September 30th, 2008The blog wasn’t letting me log in for several days but last night bo fixed it. I am very appreciative. Here are the photos that make up the bulk of what I was posting when the blog stopped working and I lost 20 minutes worth of work.
Aidan loves chewing his bath toys. He is finally big enough to bathe without slipping and sliding over onto his face.
Get it off! He is constantly removing his bib. When he’s a little tired and it’s meal time he will take it off enough to exasperate me. As you can see when he’s not tired he knows he’s not supposed to do that and thinks it’s a big game.
We are now worm farmers. We are going to use all the glorious waste to make wonderful vegetables come spring.
There is a gopher tearing holes all over our yard. The kids like to watch him and so do I but I don’t like the holes. We stuck a hose down the hole hoping to get him to run out over the weekend. He didn’t run out and neither did the water so his network of tunnels must be tremendous.
Need I say it??? BAD CAT!!!
According to the boys we have a new member of the family. The old x-box red ringed and so this one came to stay.
Awww, all of my kids have done this at one point in time. I think it’s cute and feel bad all at once.
Mmmmm, we made Ken’s cake for a belated birthday cake for myself. It’s chocolate peanut butter and ohhh so good.
Bella is stuck between the screen door and the glass door to the back. Bo pointed out how mean I was to take her picture before letting her out. I guess it was kind of mean but it was also kind of funny.
All caught up now! Maybe I will move on to blog posts about current Boulware events. One can never tell…

Something untrue.
Tuesday, September 30th, 2008Your eyes are no longer beautiful.
I just don’t know you.
No, not at all.
Not anymore.
You see, Your eyes told lies,
They made me feel beautiful.
Your eyes.
They were sweet.
A sigh – use to always escape from me.
I actually fell for you.
I fell in love with you.
And now I’m trying to fall out.
Out of love.
I’m trying to forget you, maybe forgive too.
I’m trying really hard.
I need time.
It takes time.
To forget all of what you meant to me.
You were never anything.
You were just a headache and a liar.
And don’t lie,
Everything that includes me was never important,
Yes, I’m being true.
You were never true.
If I was important, you wouldn’t have stopped
And fed our silence – with your cold indifference.
You wouldn’t have stopped loving who I was to you.
But you’re a liar.
And I can no longer appreciate anything,
Involving you.
You’ll be a mere hello and I’ll be quick with
The goodbye.
Coffee before midnight…
It was all lies.
I don’t need your words.
I don’t need you.
I don’t need anything that is you.
I simply have no way of knowing..
But I used to love you.
I use to.
I was used.
Here’s to the special
One I trusted,
And burned.
Here’s to falling for someone,
Undeserving.
Here’s to you.
happy eid

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008St Paul’s Church says Eid Mubarak!
Tuesday, September 30th, 2008The discipline required to succeed in this fast is formidable and I admire those who can meet the rigours of Ramadan, especially in this kind of heat. An earlier post received by one of my readers lamented the wide scale hypocrisy by those who say they are observing the fast when in fact they are not. Surely though God sees and knows the intents of our hearts and there is no deceiving Him with our actions.
This raises for me the challenge of prescribing a religious practice and imposing it on all society. Kuwait is in fact one of the few countries in the world where ramadan has such an overwhelming impact on public life. Expatriates and visitors are quite startled by the realisation that literally all the restuarants and hotels are closed in the daytime. The result is a split society. The obvious split is between those who have to eat and drink in secret because they are not of the Islamic faith and those who are fasting out of conviction. Yet, there are those Muslims who are not fasting simply because they do not want to - and they resent having to be hypocritical, ie; pretending to fast in order to keep face with family and society.
Is there a law in Kuwait that punishes non-fasting Muslims? Surely God would prefer a straight forward honest "I am not fasting this year" posture rather than a deceitful pretence. Is hypocrisy rewarded? No religion is exempt from hypocrisy and the Church has its fair share too.
Jesus said that when you fast you should not let anyone see and that those who show off that they are fasting will get their reward in full! In other words they will get the admiration and respect from their fellow humans but God is not fooled.
Whatever you think and whoever you are, I send you greetings in the name of God almighty, the merciful and compassionate and I pray that Eid will be a time of blessing.
Diet starts now.
Tuesday, September 30th, 2008Boredom……….
Tuesday, September 30th, 2008My Eid so far…
Tuesday, September 30th, 2008Awal shay 3eedkom imbarak o taqabal allah 6a3atkom o 3sakom min 3wadah… Although im told people who are in mournign must not say “3eekom imbarak” … is that true???
So, the verdict on going to dubai was a big fat NO… i cant, and my husband cant. We are unable to even make our lunch reservations for tommorow… so i swapped my snoopy pajams with my favourite cookie monster purple Tshirt with a big fat whole in it… and grey sweats… kinda brushed my hair a bit, then put on some vicks vaporup on my nose and throat, took some actifeed and antibiotics… and stayed wrapped infront of the tv, not really switched on, reading a novel by Emily Giffin called Something Borrowed. At least im able to read and concentrate again…
If im a bit better i might drive with my family to the chalet tommorow… though i hate it. If im not, as my throat is burning, my head is buzzing, and my ears and nose are blocked … I dont know im just weak.
Is it true? if there is a member of the family that is gone, his immediate family are not supposed to gather and have lunch together? or say 3eedkom imbarak greetings? I get the part where no makeup, and no new clothes and no 3yadee for the kids… but why is lunch a big no?
Anyways, eid is boring in Kuwait… nothing to do… guess will stay wrapped up with the vicks and actified and emily griffin until im due for work next Sunday…
Oh and i will continue writing the Beauty and the Beast Series … but on third day of 3eed when all the hoopla have turned down and people who are in Kuwait are bored with nothing to do…

Michael Moore message
Tuesday, September 30th, 2008Friends,
Everyone said the bill would pass. The masters of the universe were already making celebratory dinner reservations at Manhattan's finest restaurants. Personal shoppers in Dallas and Atlanta were dispatched to do the early Christmas gifting. Mad Men of Chicago and Miami were popping corks and toasting each other long before the morning latte run.
But what they didn't know was that hundreds of thousands of Americans woke up yesterday morning and decided it was time for revolt. The politicians never saw it coming. Millions of phone calls and emails hit Congress so hard it was as if Marshall Dillon, Elliot Ness and Dog the Bounty Hunter had descended on D.C. to stop the looting and arrest the thieves.
The Corporate Crime of the Century was halted by a vote of 228 to 205. It was rare and historic; no one could remember a time when a bill supported by the president and the leadership of both parties went down in defeat. That just never happens.
A lot of people are wondering why the right wing of the Republican Party joined with the left wing of the Democratic Party in voting down the thievery. Forty percent of Democrats and two-thirds of Republicans voted against the bill.
Here's what happened:
The presidential race may still be close in the polls, but the Congressional races are pointing toward a landslide for the Democrats. Few dispute the prediction that the Republicans are in for a whoopin' on November 4th. Up to 30 Republican House seats could be lost in what would be a stunning repudiation of their agenda.
The Republican reps are so scared of losing their seats, when this "financial crisis" reared its head two weeks ago, they realized they had just been handed their one and only chance to separate themselves from Bush before the election, while doing something that would make them look like they were on the side of "the people."
Watching C-Span yesterday morning was one of the best comedy shows I'd seen in ages. There they were, one Republican after another who had backed the war and sunk the country into record debt, who had voted to kill every regulation that would have kept Wall Street in check -- there they were, now crying foul and standing up for the little guy! One after another, they stood at the microphone on the House floor and threw Bush under the bus, under the train (even though they had voted to kill off our nation's trains, too), heck, they would've thrown him under the rising waters of the Lower Ninth Ward if they could've conjured up another hurricane. You know how your dog acts when sprayed by a skunk? He howls and runs around trying to shake it off, rubbing and rolling himself on every piece of your carpet, trying to get rid of the stench. That's what it looked like on the Republican side of the aisle yesterday, and it was a sight to behold.
The 95 brave Dems who broke with Barney Frank and Chris Dodd were the real heroes, just like those few who stood up and voted against the war in October of 2002. Watch the remarks from yesterday of Reps. Marcy Kaptur, Sheila Jackson Lee, and Dennis Kucinich. They spoke the truth.
The Dems who voted for the giveaway did so mostly because they were scared by the threats of Wall Street, that if the rich didn't get their handout, the market would go nuts and then it's bye-bye stock-based pension and retirement funds.
And guess what? That's exactly what Wall Street did! The largest, single-day drop in the Dow in the history of the New York Stock exchange. The news anchors last night screamed it out: Americans just lost 1.2 trillion dollars in the stock market!! It's a financial Pearl Harbor! The sky is falling! Bird flu! Killer Bees!
Of course, sane people know that nobody "lost" anything yesterday, that stocks go up and down and this too shall pass because the rich will now buy low, hold, then sell off, then buy low again.
But for now, Wall Street and its propaganda arm (the networks and media it owns) will continue to try and scare the bejesus out of you. It will be harder to get a loan. Some people will lose their jobs. A weak nation of wimps won't last long under this torture. Or will we? Is this our line in the sand?
Here's my guess: The Democratic leadership in the House secretly hoped all along that this lousy bill would go down. With Bush's proposals shredded, the Dems knew they could then write their own bill that favors the average American, not the upper 10% who were hoping for another kegger of gold.
So the ball is in the Democrats' hands. The gun from Wall Street remains at their head. Before they make their next move, let me tell you what the media kept silent about while this bill was being debated:
1. The bailout bill had NO enforcement provisions for the so-called oversight group that was going to monitor Wall Street's spending of the $700 billion;
2. It had NO penalties, fines or imprisonment for any executive who might steal any of the people's money;
3. It did NOTHING to force banks and lenders to rewrite people's mortgages to avoid foreclosures -- this bill would not have stopped ONE foreclosure!;
4. It had NO teeth anywhere in the entire piece of legislation, using words like "suggested" when referring to the government being paid back for the bailout;
5. Over 200 economists wrote to Congress and said this bill might actually WORSEN the "financial crisis" and cause even MORE of a meltdown.
Put a fork in this slab of pork. It's over. Now it is time for our side to state very clearly the laws WE want passed. I will send you my proposals later today. We've bought ourselves less than 72 hours.

Happy Eid to you

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Flotilla Photography
Tuesday, September 30th, 2008While you are getting all dressed up in your Eid clothing, and preparing to visit one another, I am still in my nightgown, blogging away, and snapping photos, trying to capture the vastness of the fishing blockade off the coastline. It is too much for my mind to comprehend, and there is too little I can do to get a good photo.
Here is a section of the flotilla - just a section; there are so many fishing boats!
Here is a close up, using the extended zoom (it’s so pixellated that I think extended zoom is not always such a good thing)
And so I asked my photo program - iPhoto - to see what it could do, just clicked “enhance” and this is what my photo program thought would be a better photo:

We are one shaky country
Tuesday, September 30th, 2008Kuwait is an oil filthy rich country, and that’s pretty much all about it. Every week I read about a 5 year plan to change the face of the country, and make Kuwait a worldwide business centre. We read about big millions and billions being assigned for such projects, those projects we never hear or see later. I tend to avoid getting into those things, as they ruin my mood, and raise my blood pressure. The problem comes when these silly thigs I try to avoid come in my way. Or our way should I say. Our way of life.
Every day, we use YouTube to watch the news, soccer goals, Islamic lectures, technical presentations, visual tutorials for How To stuff that otherwise are difficult to explain with words, my kid loves it for watching cartoons and I use it to encourage him with educational kids shows. All of that and more. Such a service has made YouTube part of our lives, and a life changer as well.
And then, one day a guy got an email with links to some videos he didn’t like. That man happens to be in a vital position for deciding what’s right and what’s wrong. Driven wih Islamic motives, and taking the prides of a nation on his shoulders, that guy fires up a direct letter to all ISPs to block this whole service, the good and bad of it. We suddenly read about it in the newspapers, YouTube is being blocked. The order gets canceled by the minister, as it was not signed from him, and the individual effort bypassing all authorities goes unpunished. Not only that, but perliment members have adapted the story, backing this individual, and are demanding from the ministry of communications to devote time, effort, and money to fight those videos. When people are celebrating the Ramadan Eid, the perliment members have made it their top priority on the schedules after Eid already to demand an act on those videos, and have expanded their demands to reach other sites as well, or else, they will put the minister for interrogations.
The next day we hear, the ISPs are receiving letters from the ministry of communcations, which are really nothing more than individual efforts by normal people surfing the net, sending partial links to YouTube, and other offensive partial site links, such as Flickr and others, and the ministry does nothing more than stamping and forwarding them to all ISPs for implementation! To make the matter worse, the minister of communications makes an official statement that they are forming an official committe to unite their vision and statement, then start arranging with Gulf countries, then reach out for the whole Arabic and Islamic world for one big united move against the offensive bunch of videos.
Wooho… We have never seen or heard of such Islamic real uniting, and when was the last time we saw the minister really active and caring? Only when it comes to ministry money, or his chair. I wonder how dare we speak of country opening up for western world, and becoming a worldwide business centre, when few bunch of people on the other side of the world are able to manipulate our priorities, and shake our stabilities and focus, by simply uploading few silly videos.
What message are we really giving back to them? That we are weak and easily shaken country, or as a matter of fact, whole region. And what will happen if we block YouTube and other sites? Guess what, those offensive content will keep coming, and will increase as a matter of fact. People who want to use YouTube and the like will find ways around it, and those who don’t will not know about it, just as if they are looking the other way, and they will not be able to request for those videos to be removed from YouTube anymore. since they don’t know it exists. So blocking is just a fake pretending this problem doesn’t exist, and trying to disbelief the problem will always be there, you cannot stop it.
Did anyone of those demanding fight for offensive videos try to report the video as offensive to the concerned people, YouTube them selves? I have. And so have many others who are as caring and offended by the video, as those people trying to show off. They have a bit more sense of logic though. They try to address the problem, not panic and shout out loud. And guess what, the link I reported got deleted. I even tried to proxy to make sure it’s not only removed from Kuwait, it’s still deleted.
One might think this country is not moving forward, or at least not fast enough. But I believe they’re wrong. We are moving backward full speed and there is no stopping us.

Stamford Bridge
..

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008Eid for Non-Muslims
Tuesday, September 30th, 2008Eid ul-Fitr or Id-Ul-Fitr (Arabic: عيد الفطر ‘Īdu l-Fiṭr), often abbreviated to Eid, is a Muslim holiday that marks the end of Ramadaan, the Islamic holy month of fasting. Eid is an Arabic word meaning "festivity", while Fiṭr means "to break the fast" (and can also mean "nature", from the word "fitrah") and so symbolizes the breaking of the fasting period.
Eid ul-Fitr is a three day celebration and is called "The Smaller Eid" (Arabic: العيد الصغير al-‘īdu ṣ-ṣaghīr) compared with the Eid ul-Adha that lasts four days and is called "The Greater Eid" (Arabic: العيد الكبير al-‘īdu l-kabīr).
Common greetings during this holiday are the Arabic greeting EĪd mubārak ("Blessed Eid") or ‘Īd sa‘īd ("Happy Eid"). In addition, many countries have their own greetings based on local language and traditions.
Typically, Muslims will wake up early in the morning and have a small breakfast. Muslims are encouraged to dress in their best clothes (new if possible) and to attend a special Eid prayer that is performed in congregation at mosques or open areas like fields, squares etc.
Eid al-Fitr marks the end of the fasting of Ramadaan. This has to do with the communal aspects of the fast, which expresses many of the basic values of the Muslim community. Fasting is believed by some scholars to extol fundamental distinctions, lauding the power of the spiritual realm, while acknowledging the subordination of the physical realm.[3]
The Islamic tradition also associates events with the occasion. For example, on Eid al-Fitr, the angel Gabriel descended with white clothes for each of prophet Muhammad's grandsons.
Eid al-Fitr falls on the first day of Shawwal, the month which follows Ramadan in the Islamic calendar. It is a time to give in charity to those in need, and celebrate with family and friends the completion of a month of blessings and joy.
Before the day of Eid, during the last few days of Ramadan, each Muslim family gives a determined amount as a donation to the poor. This donation is of actual food -- rice, barley, dates, rice, etc. -- to ensure that the needy can have a holiday meal and participate in the celebration. This donation is known as sadaqah al-fitr (charity of fast-breaking).
On the day of Eid, Muslims gather early in the morning in outdoor locations or mosques to perform the Eid prayer. This consists of a sermon followed by a short congregational prayer.
After the Eid prayer, Muslims usually scatter to visit various family and friends, give gifts (especially to children), and make phone calls to distant relatives to give well-wishes for the holiday. These activities traditionally continue for three days. In most Muslim countries, the entire 3-day period is an official government/school holiday.

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008Yes, there’s something wrong in the blog title, I know. I’ve lost too much sleep, therefore I have the right to sound as wrong as I want.
3eedkom imbarak :) And if it’s not Eid for you today, then 3eedkom imbarak bacher!
The amount of sophistication in kids now is quite mind boggling. One of the kids had a notepad and the names of all us uncles, with a little checkbox next to each one. The little freak was friggin doing accounting or something. Jeez, whatever happened to being pleasantly surprised?
I sneaked behind the kid and tapped his shoulder. He looked at me and feigned surprise as I pulled out my wallet.
“I shouldn’t be doing this, you’ve been annoying your parents lately haven’t you?” I said, hesitating.
“I’m very sorry. I kissed each parent’s head today.” He said. Of course, when would be a better day to kiss their heads?
“Here you go. 3eedik imbarak!” I gave him a nice round 10kd with a smile. He took it from my hand, smiled back at me and checked a little box next to my name.
“Just make sure not t… Hello? Kid?” I realized that my words were falling on deaf ears. I stopped myself when I saw him not paying attention anymore. He sat back in his chair and eyed the other uncles. He was done with me.
I hope you’ll remember that Eid al Ath7a is a few months away you little bastard! I’ve got you in my crosshairs! I was gonna do some Eid cuts anyway since the economy is dying! I’m sure the US can use my 10kd in their $700 billion rejected bailout! Or you know what? I’ll buy a PS3 game with that 10kd! Ok sure, I need to add a few more KD to get the game, but I’ll make sure it’s your favorite game and you won’t play it! In fact, I’ll play it right in front of your face and make sure to put a checkmark next to your name, which, by the way, is now mysteriously spelled “donkey.”
Grr..
frikkin kids.
Still, gotta love em :)
PS: Never “try” something with your shaver a day before Eid.

Statistical Spike
Tuesday, September 30th, 2008As many of you have figured out, I get online early in the morning, then I get through my day - and sometimes it is a long day - before I can get back to answer any comments, etc. Yesterday was one of those super-busy days, and it was night before I was able to check the blog.
Something strange was happening. The stats were way high . . . and for what?
As it turns out, it was a post written a month ago - Moonsighting, and yesterday, that post alone got 539 hits. 539 - it hasn’t been that long since I would never have thought I would get 539 hits in one day, total. I think a lot of people were trying to find out whether Ramadan had ended, if that tiny thin crescent of a moon had been spotted. It gives me great joy to tell you that I also had a lot of hits, I am guessing from the Seattle area, on the Northgate mosque, and how to get to the Northgate mosque. Maybe this blog is doing some little bit of good in the world, helping just a little. It’s all I ask.
And it remains a totally humbling thought to me that the posts that live on, and on, and on - are posts greatly written by or inspired by fellow bloggers and commenters, in this case Fahad, at his blog Salmiya to whose blog I am totally addicted. He is also a little bit here there and everywhere.
I am only sharing this with you because it gave me a shock this morning to see the spike in statistics, and because I suspect I will never see the likes of it again.
May your day be full of unexpected blessings, and may you have the eyes to see them!

Happy Eid Everyone
Tuesday, September 30th, 2008I didn't include an exclamation mark on the title of this post because I'm feeling a tad bit bitter about what I'll be doing during my Eid holiday which is doing what I did when I was twelve i.e. going to the chalet with my family. Half of my extended family and friends are already out of the country somewhere in the region or if they were smart enough, bought tickets to somewhere in breezy Europe a month or more in advance. On the bright side, I just rearranged all the new music I received from two sources a while ago so my Ipod is up and ready for that half an hour drive to the seaside tomorrow after I have lunch at my grandma's house. I noticed the nighttime weather change too and it feels mighty good.
To be honest, I'm happy Ramadan is over. The whole familial feel is great and all, but the level of road rage got so out of hand this year. Traffic lights became pretty much an option at the tail of the month. You'd think that people would think twice and remember that it's the month of piety and all that good stuff. Guess it's ironic to thank God that this holy month is over.
Well, save your pennies starting now because soon enough, the domino effect of economical collapse is going to hit us hard. This is going to be one interesting year…

Eid Mubarak Sunrise!
Tuesday, September 30th, 2008When I woke up this morning, it was a little after sunrise and the entire room was flooded with sparkling clear light. Grabbing the camera, I rushed to the window - you can’t see in the photo, but there is an entire flotilla of fishing boats about 2 kilometers off the coastline; I love fishing boats, they evoke something so timeless and serene in my heart. It has to be Eid! Such a beautiful sparkling day, it has to be Eid! And sure enough, it is.
This sparkling, clear, low-humidity, relatively low-temperature day is a blessing to us all! Eid Mubarak Kuwait, and Eid Mubarak (Eid Mubarkhom?) world!

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008Kuwait Employment Packages – What to ask for/What to Expect
Tuesday, September 30th, 2008I’ve had so many questions on “What should I ask for and what should I expect?” when moving to Kuwait for a job that I thought I would write a little diddy on it:
What you should ask for (standard) on any contract in Kuwait:
Accommodation Allowance (note that if they offer you shared......

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

I hate Capricorns! Every Capricorn that I ever met sucked :P any blogger here who belongs to this horrible star signs? Why are you like this?
I think they are arrogant
I think they make irrational decisions
I think they make their own mistakes and blame it on others
I think they purely suck :P
I think they are two faced
I think they think they are perfect and insult others...
They are careless about others feelings
They jump to conclusions without thinking
They use stupid excuses to end a relation whether friendship or relation
They talk nonsense
They always suck
I HATE THEM I HATE THEM I HATE THEM!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHH
