I remembered a girl who was two grades below me in elementary school, today. She has brown eyes and blond hair and was rather tall for her age. She barely spoke English and when she did speak, she used a few words at a time. I can’t forget her for some reason but I never knew her name; I might’ve known it before. I remember that months later, when she did make friends, she smiled more and spoke more but as a child, I realized that it was less than average. I used to compare her with the rest of the students at lunchtime from afar, while I chatted and ate lunch with my friends. I often wondered when she’ll make a change, if ever and if we can do something. I wanted to “rescue her” because she was one of the few students from Eastern Europe (Yugoslavia or somewhere near there) and I thought she must be lonely. My friends and I offered her our friendship but she always declined, maybe because we were a couple of years older or we’d struggle to communicate. Nevertheless, we tried then gave up when she adjusted. That made me happy, but then again, she returned to her lonely ways. We never tried again, and I never did. I think that people like her who experience traumatic childhoods like wars, abuse etc would not speak a lot. They usually remain silent and react to hurt, sadness or joy in a smaller degrees than others. I guess, they shield themselves from any emotion be it good or bad to avoid being hurt or disappointed, again. It’s a defense mechanism, I guess. She wasn’t the only one. I remember a small girl from first grade who was the same but got loads of attention because she was adorable and small. She became extremely happy and energetic after a while and we loved it.

The loner-girl and my friend Dusan (a boy from my 4th grade class) still come to mind and I wonder about them. I’m sure the girl is fine now because women are resilient and are stronger than they appear. They manage to find strength in time and when they do, they blow you away. I don’t know about Dusan, but I hope he is. He was the shyest little boy I’ve ever met and since I was a year older, I looked after him and helped him in class. I remember he was a brilliant mathematician and was extremely quiet. He always smiled those genuine smiles and looked at people in a way that made us want to love him but there was also something in the way he silently looked at me and smiled that made me feel he knew my secrets (whatever secrets in 4th grade! Like forgetting a homework assignment or something). The looks made me want to escape because they were “all knowing” and elementary school with all it’s simplicity was made complicated by them sometimes. Simply because, those hazel eyes sometimes seemed judgemental.

So, Dusan and lonely girl, I hope you’re happy. Wherever you are. Except Dusan’s older brother. I hated you, you were too angry with the world and I tried to “fix” your views but futilely. Until a bit before your family left my country and you tried to “make nice” but I thought you sucked by then. The guy was a 6th grader who always found something stupid to complain about. He’s probably goth now or is writing lyrics that made you want to roll you eyes and throw your shoes at him.

Dr. Alrabaa taught me English Literature and Anthropology in college. He is awesome, I loved his way of teaching and challenging students. I got A and A- respectively in his classes… but I don’t agree with so many points given out in this article! As a matter of fact I think it’s a bit of everything; anger, experience, sterotype, and truth!!!
