I was reading New magazine (picked it up while waiting for a drink in Starbucks) and I stumbled upon an article regarding the movie United 93. I read the first paragraph or two, and thought, ‘Oh, great, another one of those articles.’ One of those apologetic ones about how even though we know we didn’t cause 9/11, we’ll let ourselves be bullied with it. I scribbled (some of) this down on an empty page, knowing full-well that I’ll rewrite it into this blog:

I’m all for helping cultural respect and all that pretty stuff, but what is this obsession with keeping “the west” (and I ask you to define just who that is from an informed perspective) happy and dying to have “them” “accept” us? The fact is, diversity is a beautiful thing, it makes life interesting, with that said, I for one am proud to say that seeking this perceived-to-be sanctimonious approval (from “the west”) is not even a remote concern of mine. I’m just pretty disappointed with those who literally betray all things familiar to them, like their culture just to pursue someone else’s culture just because they say it’s the best thing out there-or that it’s a lot better than most everyone else’s. What annoys me the most is that those who choose to pursue often do so based on things they watch on TV-things they’re told are awesome; why have I not met a single person who has an informed opinion (oh, yes, those exist) about why they cut off what’s real here and follow things that aren’t even real elsewhere-in fact, they’re just theories at best. Do you honestly think a Utopia exists in this day an age? Did it ever? It takes people to make a Utopia, not the place to look flashy or interesting, or just plain old colorful.

What’s hilarious is that the most extreme cases of people ‘westernizing;’ upon questioning as to why they take to wearing clothes (as an example-apply the logic on other things you see) that, let’s be frank, look freaking weird given our social environment, they reply with a blank look on their faces, and sometimes, 7ag illi mo hayneen ya3ni, a shrug. Sure, a lot of gasbags are all for yelling that it’s their right to dress up as clowns, and hey, I’m all for it, but chances are your reasons for following this trends are as uninformed as any other stupid thing people do out of mimic and nothing more.

To lay it down bluntly: people are freaking copycats. People here, some of them, especially get on my nerves mostly because they mimic out of reflex, not knowledge. But it’s to be expected, right?

Bas why? I mean, some of us are mindful enough to have an identity. Why are people choosing to go with the flow? Are you lonely? Yes, we’re all insecure but do you not have enough faith that you need to leap over the fences of comfort into unfamiliar territory just to be ‘accepted’ by people who don’t even know where your country is?

This is about mimic for the sake of mimic. Because people are, as intelligent as they claim to be, sheep.

I know I felt this way before, I used to feel guilty about 9/11. Like I had something to do with it. I was stupid to think that. I know full-well that neither I, nor my faith had anything to do with it. Lots of scholars voiced that out-we hopefully know that (if you think religion caused 9/11 go study on your religion plx. Fashaltoona) but we (should) all know that cameras are only directed at interesting people right? Right?!

Anyway, on guilt, yeah, don’t burden yourself with the idea that you had something to do with 9/11-don’t even let anyone throw it on you. I’m pretty sure I had nothing to do with 9/11. How about you? No? Well stop being apologetic for it and carrying the burden that the very people who caused it aren’t even carrying. I’m not sorry I’m Arab, Muslim, Kuwaiti. I know these things are all good. All good.

Yesterday i went with my friend to new restaurant in Qortuba Co-op called Black & White. The Restaurant Located in the 2nd floor of the Co-op. The place is so cool and big, the decorate is simple and so 50’s everything is black and white, so we ordered take away since we was in a hurry, so i ordered turkey with bacon sandwich and my friend ordered mozzarella burger and both of them comes with fries, and we also ordered chicken wings.

1st we taste the chicken wings and it was not that tasty, it wasn’t that spicy like newyork friz or as buffols and the sauce wasn’t same as all restaurant use, the taste was different, so i give it 3 of 5.

then, we started with our sandwich and burger. the sandwich was pretty good little dry but good and the burger was good but the mozzarella was so big, it was like as big as the burger. so i gave both of the 4 of 5.

Eh. What a week… Something tells me the art instructor doesn’t check her university e-mail… And I don’t know her office hours, so I don’t know how the hell I’m supposed to reach her-I need to make up that midterm.

I discovered that I like deleting old files from my machine. You know, funny pictures or clips that one accumulates over a period of time, and then ultimately deletes because they’re pretty lame, apparently. I feel good.

Anyway, at uni we had International Week (or some other crap) and through-out the whole campus, there were flags of pretty much any country whoever organized this could find. Ironically, there was only one Kuwaiti flag, and while it may be the biggest one it was tucked away in a ‘multi-purpose’ room that is rarely visited by pretty much anyone if it’s not a special occassion…

Aham shay, inna the Iraqi flag was hanging in the library. Mind you, Feb 25-26 weren’t even celebrated as far as I know (or uni just sucks on epic levels that no one noticed if they did anything) so it’s kind of a slap in the freaking face. 3omooman, these two guys (3ala rasi) took down the Iraqi flag. Up comes this idiot girl, and publishes this half-assed article about being proud of her heritage as a kawlia, blah blah, and then making a snooty comment about how she won’t comment on the boys’ actions 3ala asas inna they’re low, basically.

The guys countered her lamer-article, giving pretty much the same argument I just provided that uni didn’t provide a Kuwaiti flag, and of all days, hung up an Iraqi flag during the days of the freaking liberation.

However, to be perfectly frank, their rebuttle was–too tame for my liking. Considering writing a border-flame, yet quite diplomatic ‘STFU’ reply, namely no apologizing for the fact that, this once, Kuwaitis won’t be silenced just to make some idiots happy, especially when it comes to our national day(s). I’m not sorry your country shoved forces into mine, because the fact of the matter is, your whining when you see none of our flags–hatha ‘3air 7okom, seriously. Ga3deen mithil il marath, ou law feena 5air, oh citizens, open your mouths.

Mind you, I’d polish it, and yes, blah blah, ‘they’re not all bad,’ but seriously, that girl had no tact whatsoever. ya7ibhom 7ag antagnozing us.

Mama, if you’re so proud, go there and fix things up instead of sitting here and asking for things you wouldn’t dream of there, right now. I don’t care how wonderful the place may be once it’s on its feet (personally I don’t believe it ever will stand) just butt the hell out. She took the thing way out of context and she’s most likely a bgara maynoona.

I bought two cool books today too.
