Heading home

Net Admin with Lymphoma

Salam all.
Well, I had an ultrasound to the neck on Friday, and the Dr. was able to take a sample by needle aspiration… he basically inserted a needle to the side of my neck while watching where it is going using the ultrasound/sonar as a guide. Then he wiggles the needle about to collect cell samples and send them to the lab.

The results will only go to my main doctor next week and I have an appointment in February for the repeat PET/CT scan and a Dr. visit to discuss the findings. Since that’s more than 3 weeks, I get to go home for two months until the appointment.

I’m booked for Sunday’s flight insha’Allah.

Salam,
Nasser.

Better News!!

Net Admin with Lymphoma

Salam all,
Well, looks like I’ll be able to make it for the migration.. UNLESS they move beyond 12/Dec again!

In today’s appointment, the Dr. said that after a round table discussions with other doctors, they didn’t see it was worth going through radiotherapy at this point. There’s still a relapse risk during the 1st 3 months, so I’ll need to come back and redo the PET scan in February (then in 6 months, then in 1 year, etc.. by then, the new building near makki jumma is planning to have a PET scanner, 1st one in Kuwait, so if there’s no relapse hopefully, I can do the checks in Kuwait for the next 20 years;) ). But until then, I should be able to go home as soon as I finish the ultrasound for the neck (thyroid/ghuddah blood tests came back negative which is good, so it is more likely just an infection).

I estimate I’ll be back in about a week or 10 days insha’Allah.
The next scan is 3 months from the last one which was on 9/11 so it will be on 9/february. very near Eid al-Adha?

Salam,
Nasser.

Frustration: Good news and bad news

Net Admin with Lymphoma

Salam all….
Well, the results are in…. kinda inconclusive but promising….

The thing is, the large mass that was worrism has diminished and what’s left of it is not showing any malignant activity on the PET scan which is good. However, there’s a small spot that lit up in the PET scan just to the left of my neck. It is unusual for the big mass to go away while such a small spot remains. Therefore, there’s optimistic that this is just a regular infection as I’ve been having a soar throat/sinuse lately. Still, there’s a slight chance it might be even something else like thyroid or something (ghudda).

Dr. is planning an ultrasound sometime next week to see if the spot is large enough for a needle/biopsy. Even though needle samples are not that conclusive either, but it might help show if it is some other type/disease entirely.

Now the frustrating part, I was hoping I’d be able to make it before the new building migration date which is currently at 12/DEC, but the Dr. today made it clear that although the mass is inactive it was initially large, and so to minimize the chance of relapse (lymphoma coming back again in that spot) I must have radiotherapy to the small area in the chest!!

So, the plan is to wait and test to see if the small lump showing in my neck is bad or not. If it is not, then I just need radiotherapy to the chest. Otherwise, high dose chemo or worse is needed.

Either way, I’m looking at over a month here.

If it’s just radiotherapy that is needed, given its side effects (tiredness/dizziness, etc…) I might consider having it back home in Kuwait.

Salam,
Nasser.

Too Many of…

Outspoken Nothingness

Look around your house, what is one thing that you
have too many of?

November 12th, 2005 | 10:06 pm

And if it dies, so do they!!

Outspoken Nothingness

4 pm - I just entered the univerity library, books in one hand, bottle of water in another, and a smile on my face. So far, the day has been great, and for once, I was in the mood to study during midterm week. I found a table, quietly sat down, opened my book and started reading. I haven’t even finished the first paragraphe when two girls a few tables away from me started talking, or should I say yelling to each other, laughing as loudly as they could possible can and started giving each other high fives (don’t ask!)

4:05: One of those girls is now on the phone, talking and laughing even louder than she was before.

4:07: With the girl in front of me still on the phone, I hear the phone ringing from the table behind me, followed by “alooo…. HALLAAA….SHLOONICH!?!!!”

So this goes on for about 10 minutes, both the girl in front of me and behind me are on the phone, chatting away ignoring everything around them. After they’re done with their important *cough* calls, they go on talking, and they were getting msgs every 2 minutes!!

I take a bathroom break, and there’s a girl in the bathroom who’s on the phone!

I’m going to skip the part about being quiet in the library, but this is for: PEOPLE WHO HAVE CELLPHONES PERMANENTLY ATTACHED TO THEIR EARS!

For the betterment of society as a whole, here’s some things you might want to think off:

  • You do not need to automatically raise your voice when you answer your phone. The rest of the world does not need to hear every last detail, no matter how important you might find it. And YES we do know you own a cell phone, just like everyone else!
  • It is not necessary to place your cellphone in a prominent location, such as your desk in class, when you can’t answer it and won’t be needing it then!
  • Answering your phone while in (or worse, using) the bathroom is completely inappropriate. The person you’re talking to does not want to hear the sound of a toilet flushing in the middle of their conversation!
  • As cute and amusing as you might find your ringtone, other people might not share your appreciation for its musical originality *cough* when it goes off during a lecture or in the quiet study area of the library!!
  • You don’t look cool when you check your messages every two minutes!! You just look like a communication-starved obsessive compulsive teenager/person!
  • When you’re out with one of your friends, do consider keeping the conversation under 30 minutes, they’re there to hang out and catch up with you, not to see and hear you be on the phone with someone else!

For those people who are always on their cell phones to and from class.. .how exciting can “OHMIGOD I was just in math and now I am totally not in math.” be? Doesn’t it ever get boring?

Do you think the Kuwaiti society is over-using their cell phones!?

I do! In the corridors, in class waiting for the professor, in their cars, in malls, in restaurants, in the jam3eeya, whereever i go atleast 7/10 people are on their cellphones - if not talking, msging.

The other day I was in my local “mostaw9if”, where I had to wait until the doctor was off his phone for him to check up on me! It’s ridiculous!

Don’t get me wrong, cell phones are lovely, and I would feel lost without mine… but having it stuck to your ear is just plain tacky, and sometimes just plain rude!

Trip #2

Net Admin with Lymphoma

Salam all.
Well, I’m all set for my treatment follow up trip.
I’m leaving on Monday, 7-Nov-2005 to London insha’Allah

Depending on the PET/CT scan results, it might be just for 10 days or over a month! As if there are any small traces left, they’ll need to focus involved field radiation to get rid of it.

Given the initial large size of the mass in my mediastum/chest though, it is likely it will need Radiation although the Dr. seemed a bit optimistic (I guess they have to show they are ;) )

I also lost my appetite about a week ago, which is I guess another indication… although, it could be just the cold/soar throat I have.. hmm… but that could be another indication in itself? ;)

We’ll see after the scan on the 9th and the appointment/result on the 15 of November insha’Allah.

Saddly, right after I returned from my first trip I came to know that my child-hold neighborhood friend who’s also my collegue roommate in Boston was flown to London a few days earlier in August. He has a brain tumor. He should be done with the chemo therapy by now to shrink it and start radiation as well.

Hmm… another Lebanese friend who lived in Boston for a long time also had a brain tumor a few years back. He was treated and recovered well last I heard.

Although my cancer type is different, is there a link here? I wonder…?

Your prayers,

Salam,
Nasser.
